Makeup Throughout History
Makeup has been around for many centuries from the time of Ancient Egypt with the Pharaohs to current times with celebrities like Jeffree Star. Let's take a walk through some of these decades together.
4000 B.C.
Men and women in Ancient Egypt used Unguent to keep their faces free of wrinkles as well as used soot to blacken their under eyes, eyelashes, and eyelids. During special occasions they would use kohl in green and blue to color their eyelids.
1600
Wealthy women during the 1600s loved pale skin and used a face powder called Aqua Toffana that contained arsenic. This caused many cosmetic related deaths in women of the time. Cosmetics were no longer appealing to men.
1830
Mascara was first used by women around 1830 and was made by a company named Rimmel that is still popular today. The mascara was composed of coal dust and petroleum jelly. This was later made into what was known as a cake mascara that came in a compact complete with a lash brush.
1910
Starting in 1910 women started to see the first pressed powders in a compact case complete with a mirror. The compact contained a powder puff for easy application
1950
The famous celebrity Audrey Hepburn popularized the cat eye by using eyeliner. Eyeliner had been used for years previously and could be seen in Ancient Egypt, but by this time the compound had been changed to a wax based formula.
1970
The cosmetic company Maybelline popularized colorful eye shadows and liners that appealed greatly to women. The feminist movement took place shortly after this.
1990
The anti-aging fad begins. Women begin to desire cosmetics that combat wrinkles and fine lines. Many facial creams and masks were released onto the market.
2000-Present
The cosmetic surgery fad took over and is still very popular today. Some that can be seen are brow lifts, cheek implants, Botox injections, and lip fillers. Women have always gone to great lengths for beauty. Are you crazy enough to go under the knife?
