Representation of ethnicity in the music industry.

Pat Boone

In 1950's there was still a lot of racism which still went around especially in America. Pat Boone is a man who sung black people songs as he was white. Black people wasn't even allowed on the radio in these times so white people used to cover black artists songs and get money for it as they would sell it to white ethnicity and they would listen to it where as if it was a black person singing it, it wouldn't have been listened too nor played.

Stereotypes

In 1970's in America this is where rap music began. A song called 'Rappers Delight' is what started of the stereotype of black people being rappers. Although Eminem is a white rapper, he has to 'team up' with Dr Dre as it was very hard for him to succeed in the music industry being a white rapper. It was the collaboration that got Eminem out there.

Micheal Jackson

Micheal Jackson was on of the first artists to break the stereotype. He was originally a black artist in a predominately white artist genre at the time. Micheal was the fire African American to enter the viral pop genre as he became a global star on MTV.  

Due to a skin disease, Micheal changed the colour of his skin, which later helped him to produce the song 'Black or white' which actually highlights the importance of no matter what colour your skin is, you're still the same person. 

We now have a range of different artists who break stereotypes of discrimination again black people. Beyonce for example, in some of her songs she talks about feminism but in her most recent album the song 'Formation' actually goes against negative stereotypes of black people. She even brings in Black history. For example there is a wide shot where Beyonce is shown on top of a car which shows the terrible affects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. This mostly affected black people as a majority of them was living here at the time. In the following shot it shows a black Pastor with a cross necklace across his chest which implies how Black people worship their God therefore giving them more positive labels as they wouldn't disrespect God.
