Welcome to online Spanish 1! As new Spanish students, there is so much for you to do to get ready to tackle our first Supersite assignments next week. Let's go!

Task 1: Use BibliU (link in D2L) to get your Access Code for Supersite.

I can also grant you a 2-week grace period access to the Supersite if something goes wrong with BibliU, which is a new program for us at NFC.

Task 2: Finalize your registration on the VHL Supersite:

VHL sign-up instructions are found on this page: Getting Started: My school required me to purchase an access code – Support Center (vhlcentral.com)

There are also general instructions for you prepared by VHL.

You only need to view these five screencasts:

"Show me how to create an account",

"Show me how to enroll in a Supersite course",

"Show me how to make the best use of my Supersite",

"Show me how to use my vhlcentral online textbook", and
"Show me how to start, save and submit course assignments"

The specific instructions for how to enroll in our particular Supersite course are found at this URL (access it after viewing information above).

Task 3: Begin learning how to navigate in Supersite
To do so, go to this page and download the Student Guide for Supersite 3.0.

Then, read the following:

a. Pages 6-27: starting with Create Your Account and ending at Activity Types

b. Pages 40-52: starting with Resources and ending at Reviewing Notifications

The other material covers parts of Supersite we do not use. You do not need to read it.

See the next slide for VHL Tech Support information

The phone number for VHL tech support is 800-248-2813. Tech support is available at the times shown below (all of which are in the Eastern Time Zone).

Live chat with VHL Tech Support is available from within any activity on Supersite.

Have you completed those 3 tasks? That means it's time for you to learn where to find everything in our course.

D2L vs. SUPERSITE in SPN 1120

This course might be different from other courses you've taken online at NFC, because we use both the D2L platform and the Panorama Supersite. You will be working in 2 different systems (they are not integrated with each other), so you'll need to know what each is used for.

In D2L you will find:

1. Your weekly News Item, which tells you exactly what is going on in our course each week.News Items will publish every Sunday night. Please always read them carefully!

2. Your four Practice Tests (one for each Lesson we cover on the VHL Supersite).

3. Review documents for our 2 summative assessments--the Midterm and the Final Exam.
4. The Midterm and the Final Exam themselves.
5. Discussion boards that you will use to sign up for our Live Session meetings this semester.

5. Pages that give you access to extra content that I've created for you.

6. Your syllabus and other orientation materials and assignments.

7. Your official course grade and access to me via the email link.

See the next slide to learn about what's in Supersite.

On the VHL Supersite (http://www.vhlcentral.com/) you will find:

1. Animated, interactive grammar tutorials that expand upon information presented in your textbook, Panorama, and test you on your preliminary understanding of the material.

2. Required readings and videos for each Lesson in Panorama.

3. All assigned chapter exercises for each Lesson in Panorama. (Each Lesson's work is worth 8% of your course grade, so please don't neglect to do it. Please note that if you turn work in after the deadline, it is subject to an automatic 20% penalty per day late.)

4. Your vText (online version of the textbook) for Panorama.

The D2L component and the Supersite component combine to make online SPN 1120 a complete language-learning experience.

Go to the next slide for some key information about this course.

  • The grammar overall gets more challenging as the semester progresses--if you start to struggle with material we're covering, please seek free tutoring right away (via the 24/7 Tutoring tab in D2L).

  • Please do not lose points because you neglect to do basic things like submitting your Supersite work on time, taking your Practice Test each chapter, and completing your two Live Sessions this semester.
    Remember, please:
    • Supersite work is worth 32% of your course grade.
    • Practice Tests are worth 16% of your course grade.
    • Live Sessions are worth 12% of your course grade.
