HOW TO STUDY A TEXT

Preview the Text

Look at the title, headings, and any pictures or diagrams.

Try to predict what the text might be about. This helps activate your background knowledge.

Skim for the Main Idea

Quickly read the introduction and conclusion (or the first and last paragraphs).

Identify the main idea or purpose of the text.

Highlight Key Words

As you read the text more carefully, underline or highlight important words and phrases.

Pay attention to new vocabulary, topic sentences, and repeated ideas.

4. Use Context to Understand Vocabulary
If you see a word you don’t know, don’t stop immediately.
Look at the sentences around it for clues about its meaning. Only check a dictionary if you’re still unsure.
5. Take Notes
Write down the main points of each paragraph in your own words.
Use bullet points or a mind map to organize the information.
6. Ask Questions
As you read, think about what the text is trying to tell you.
Write down any questions you have or things you don’t understand to review later.
7. Summarize the Text
After reading, write a short summary in your own words.
Focus on the main idea and the most important details.
By studying texts this way, you'll improve not only your understanding but also your reading, vocabulary, and speaking skills!
