Reflecting on AS Media: Research and Planning

The genre of Social Realism was new to us, and so we had to do a lot of research to understand the conventions of the genre. This tested our research skills as we had to make sure we were viewing reliable sources.

We also did research into making our own sound effects, settling eventually on making our own through building layers. This helped us to understand that research and the internet do not always provide us with answers.

However, we did not really look at our Target Audience in much depth, nor did we ask on their opinions of our film opening. This would've helped us to understand where and how we could have improved to draw them in.

Therefore I hope to involve the Target Audience more through using audience questionnaires and focus groups to know what interests and draws in a prospective audience.

Storyboarding was an area we were less skilled in, seeing as we all preferred to dive straight into the making. Even though we used a storyboard, we used it very loosely and it was more us rearranging the storyboard to fit our new creative ideas than working with it.

In the A2 course I want to make sure the film trailer revolves around the storyboard and relies on it more, rather than the other way round.

We also used a shot list loosely. We set the template of the shot list up, but we didn't really use it during filming. However, this would've been really helpful when it came to editing and selecting clips, as we would've known which clips were our good takes, thus saving us time. Therefore, I feel that in the A2 course filming, a shot list would be good to use due to the efficiency it provides.
