Hard Skills

  • Easy to quantify
  • You'll learn them at school, reading books, online etc
  • Are required to get the job

So soft skills are...?

  • Not quantifiable
  • A little trickier to learn
  • Absolutely necessary for teamwork

Oxford Dictionary describes soft skills as:

Personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people."

Empathy

Being able to empathize with your team allows you to fully understand the problems that they face and find a way to make your project work for everyone.

Communication

  • Speak clearly and with conviction

  • Listen to other people's ideas

  • Don't expect people to guess what you're thinking

Accountability

Take ownership of your mistakes

Humility

  • Nobody knows everything
  • Always be willing to learn from others
  • It's okay to ask for help
  • Accept constructive criticism

Time management

  • How much time you spend planning?
  • Actually coding?
  • Working with your team to come up with new ideas?

More soft skills:

  • Patience

  • Approachability and helpfulness

  • Teamwork

  • Problem solving

  • Creativity

  • Adaptability

  • Leadership

  • Self Awareness

  • And more!

Real life examples:

"The hard skills will get you an interview, but you need soft skills to get and keep the job."

Thank you!
