Husbands, Love Your Wives

Ephesians

5:25-33

1:4 For he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world that we may be holy and unblemished in his sight in love. 1:5 He did this by predestining us to adoption as his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the pleasure of his will—

1:6 to the praise of the glory of his grace

1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 1:8 that he lavished on us in all wisdom and insight....

1:11 In Christ we too have been claimed as God’s own possession.

5:25 Husbands,

love your wives just as

Christ loved the church

and gave himself for her....

Ephesians 5:25-33

25  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
28  So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body.

Ephesians 5:25-33

31      FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.
32      This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.
33      Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her ....

26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

How Christ Loved the Church

(vv. 26-27)

28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives....

Application for Husbands

(vv. 28-32)

26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

How Christ Loved the Church-Applied to Husbands

(vv. 26-27)

28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

Application for Husbands

(vv. 28-32)

"This one is now flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone" (Gen 2:23).

(vv. 28-32)

32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.

Application for Husbands

(vv. 28-32)

33 Nevertheless, each one of you must also love his own wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Paul's Conclusion to 5:21-33
