Disaster Cleanup

Isaiah 32:9-20

Isaiah 32:9 Rise up, you women who are at ease, And hear my voice; Give ear to my word, You complacent daughters.
10 Within a year and a few days You will be troubled, O complacent daughters;
For the vintage is ended, And the fruit gathering will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease; Be troubled, you complacent daughters; Strip, undress and put sackcloth on your waist,
12 Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
13 For the land of my people in which thorns and briars shall come up; Yea, for all the joyful houses and for the jubilant city.
14 Because the palace has been abandoned, the populated city forsaken. Hill and watch-tower have become caves forever, A delight for wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks;
15 Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a fertile field,
And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness
And righteousness will abide in the fertile field.
17 And the work of righteousness will be peace,
And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.
18 Then my people will live in a peaceful habitation,
And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places;
19 And it will hail when the forest comes down,
And the city will be utterly laid low.
20 How blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters, Who let out freely the ox and the donkey.

9 Rise up, you women who are at ease, hear my voice; you complacent daughters, give ear to my speech.
The Complacent Women (v. 9)
The Disaster Ahead (vv. 10-14)
10 In little more than a year you will shudder, you complacent women; for the grape harvest fails, the fruit harvest will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease, shudder, you complacent ones; strip, and make yourselves bare, and tie sackcloth around your waist.
12 Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
13 for the soil of my people growing up in thorns and briers, yes, for all the joyous houses in the exultant city.
14 For the palace is forsaken, the populous city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks;

Renewal is Coming! (vv. 15-18)
15 until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. 16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.

Renewal is Coming! (vv. 15-18)
17 And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust
forever. 18 My people will abide in a peaceful
habitation, in secure dwellings,
and in quiet resting places.

Luke 4:18 (Isa 61) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God’s glory.”

Renewal is Coming! (vv. 15-18)
17 And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust
forever. 18 My people will abide in a peaceful
habitation, in secure dwellings,
and in quiet resting places.

Summary (vv. 19-20)
19 And it will hail when the forest falls down, and the city will be utterly laid low. 20 Happy are you who sow beside all waters, who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free.
God excels at taking what sin left desolate and renewing it to flourishing, fruitful life.
From what do you try to get comfort, ease, security?
To what/where do you go when you feel discomfort/insecurity?
