Is the southernmost country in Africa. Has a population   of 53 million people.

HIV / AIDS

HIV is a virus spread through body fluids that affects specific cells of the immune system, called CD4 cells, or T cells.

 

Over time, HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease.

Infected population

In the country as a whole, around 5.5 million people currently live with HIV/AIDS (more than one in 10) and the epidemic has already caused the deaths of 3 million, mainly adults in their prime.

Infected Profile

  • 52% of the infected are women.
    • Transmission: Sex workers.
      • Sex workers in South Africa also face high levels of stigma and discrimination.
        • Age: 30-34 years old.

Diagnosis

  • In most cases people don't know that they have become infected of HIV/AIDS.

  • Acute retroviral syndrome which is a glandular fever-like illness with fever, rash, joint pains and enlarged lymph nodes.
