WHAT IS REFRIGERATION

A process that removes heat.

To provide cooling to industrial processes.

??

REFRIGERANT

  • A chemical  used in a cooling mechanism as the heat carrier which undergoes a phase change from gas to liquid and back to gas.

REFRIGERATION PROCESS

OPERATION PRINCIPLE

  1. Low-pressure refrigerant gas is drawn into a compressor, thus converting into high-pressure and high-temperature refrigerant gas then passed into a shell and tube heat exchanger
  2. Due to compression process, heat is generated and it must be removed in the condenser.
  3. The gas condenses into liquid phase and is collected in the receiver
  4. From the receiver, the high P liq refrigerant is pushed through a small opening in an expansion valve

5. The liq changes its phase as it expands and pumped into evaporator

6. Main purpose is to remove unwanted heat from the product via liq refrigerant

7. Heat is transferred when the T of liq refrigerant must be lower than the T of product

8. Liq refrigerant is drawn from the evaporator by the compressor via suction line and leaves the evaporator in vapour form

9. Repeat processes.

DIAGRAM OF REFRIGERATION CYCLE

Basic component of refrigerator consist of :

  • Compressor
  • Condenser
  • Expansion valve
  • Evaporator
  1. Compressor

-The job of compressor is to suck vapor from the evaporator and force it into condenser.

The example of compressor

2. Condenser

-A device or unit used to condense vapor into liquid

-The purpose of condenser is to remove the amount of heat that is equal to the sum of heat absorbed in the evaporator and the heat produce by compressor.

The example of condenser

3. Expansion valve

-The main purpose of expansion valve is to ensure a sufficient pressure differential between the high and low side of the plant

4. Evaporation system

-The evaporator works the opposite of the condenser, here refrigerant liquid is converted to gas, absorbing heat from the air in the compartment.

Type of  evaporator

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

Advantages

- Very efficient in humid region

- Work better than evaporation systems when it comes to allergies

- Process can be reversed which would help it become a heater

Disadvantages

- Less eco-friendly

- More complicated process than the evaporative system

- Requires more energy

- Expensive in terms of installation, maintenance and function

DESIGN

  • The system must be clean, dry, and free from all contaminants
  • The compressor must be operated within safe temperature, pressure and electrical limits
  • The system must be designed and operated so that proper lubrication is maintained in the compressor at all times
  • The system must be designed and operated so that excessive liquid refrigerant does not enter the compressor
  • Refrigeration compressor are designed for to pump refrigerant vapor, and will tolerate only a limited quantity of liquid refrigerant
  • Proper refrigerant feed to the evaporator must be maintained, and excessive pressure drop in the refrigerant piping must be avoided.
