ZMIENIAJĄC PRZESTRZEŃ

CHANGING SPACES
Opis projektu 'Zmieniąjac przestrzeń'
"Changing Spaces" - project summary

We wanted to invite the people using the paths surrounding the Museum of the History of Polish Jews to the space between the Museum's facade and the Ghetto Uprising Memorial. Our goal was to provoke thoughts and reflections about the space, which for many is merely a part of their daily routes.

Title Text

We placed blue arrows, which led to a spot in front of the Museum, on the paths around it. We assumed that the subjects of our experiment would follow the arrows to the spot. We expected them to stop and look around, searching for something "special" which was supposed to catch their attention.

Nobody followed the arrows. The blue spot aroused the curiosity of a child passing on its bike. Most people passed the signs by without noticing them. Some were busy taking photos of the Memorial and the Museum, others were in a hurry to get home or catch a bus.
Nie poddaliśmy się.

We didn't give up.
Przeprowadziliśmy wywiady z mieszkańcami pobliskich bloków, z właścicielami psów, rowerzystami, rodzinami, ludźmi starymi i młodymi.

We interviewed people from the neighborhood, dog owners, bike riders, families, the old and the young. One of the women we spoke to has been living in the area for 60 years, a young couple moved in a few days ago. Each person offered us their point of view on the area surrounding the Museum and the Memorial, as well as on the Museum and its activities.

Jak ci się podoba ta okolica?

How do you like the area?

Text

"Lots of greenery, nice people..."

"There's a lot of greenery - it's very pleasant!"

"[The Museum] took some of the greenery away."

"As a dog owner, I hate the Museum."

"It's beautiful, especially the Museum [building]."

Dlaczego tu przyszliście?

Why did you come here?
"We had been planning to see the building. I'd heard a lot about how beautiful and interesting it is."

"My grandparents and great-grandparents lived here, and so do I."

"This is the first time we're here."

Czy wiesz co to za miejsce?

Do you know what this place is?
"I think it's a museum... yes?"

"That's the Museum of Polish Jews, but I didn't read what the memorial is for."

What do you think about other people who use this space?
"The [people on] trips from Israel keep to themselves, they don't really chat. When tourists come from other countries, they come up to me and ask about the dogs..."

"I think when they're in Poland, they're scared of us. It's a shame, because I think they have nothing to be afraid of. At least, I hope so."

"I like the comemmorations that take place here. Young people often come here, and I like that."

"Large groups always come here. And that's beautiful."

What do you think about the recent changes in the area?
"I liked the view of the Memorial from a distance. Now to really appreciate it, you need to stand right by the wall."

"I used to live here, many years ago, on the corner of Żelazna and Świerczewskiego. Back then, there was only the memorial. The area has changed a lot."

"It's incomparable to the 1950s and 60s."
