XL Recording has been founded in 1989 by Richard Russell, Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes. Therefore the record company has been in business for 28 years. It is a British independent record label.
Before joining XL, Nines has worked independently and has released music by himself. However, since Nines signed a record deal with XL in December 2016, the record label released his debut album "One foot out". This album peaked the top 4 spot in the UK albums charts which was nines' first charts entry. The album has been announced a day before release with no clear promotion.
As of 2017, XL has many big artists like Adele, Kurupt FM, Frank Ocean and Radiohead. The label has also previously worked with Azealia Banks, Dizzee Rascal, Giggs, Novelist and the king of grime, Wiley.
The label is also affiliated with the New Gen label, Terrible Records, and Young Turks.
