Using Drupal

Refer to the the rest of the videos under "Defining Drupal"

  • Note that the dashboard has been removed in Drupal 8
  • Shortcut bar is now a tab that says "shortcuts" on it.
  • Instead of "modules" tab to change modules, you have to go to "extend" tab. Instead of just unchecking a module, though, you have to uninstall it. 
  • Adding shortcuts allows you to navigate to different pages easily. You can create shortcuts by clicking on the star in the title of any page. 
  • You can also add new shortcuts to pages within your site. Shortcuts in Drupal 8 allow you to add content from the shortcut bar including pages and articles.

  • Shortcut sets can be changed in My Account -> Shortcuts
  • You can change the way the administration panel looks by going to  Appearance and then on the bottom of the page, choosing the administration theme. 
  • You can also install new themes for the view side of the site in order to change the look of the site.

  • There are 2 different content types in Drupal: Article and Basic Page
  • Nodes can be moved to the front of the page by editing the node -> Promotion Options -> Promoted to Front of Page
  • You can edit nodes by clicking on an existing node and add tags for SEO engines to find the nodes faster.
  • You can make nodes stay at the top of a page by making it sticky to the top of the list. 
  • Nodes can be deleted at various points.
  • Title can be changed at Configuration
  • Logo can be changed by going to Appearance -> Settings -> Logo Settings (uncheck box to show upload screen)

Controlling Content

Refer to the the rest of the videos under "Controlling Content"

  • Drupal automatically trims content for you
  • Trim Length can be found by going to Structure -> Content Types -> Article -> Manage Display
  • Creating revisions can be done by clicking on content and then clicking on edit. Once you're on the edit page, be sure to click on the "Create new Revision" under the date it was last saved.
  • Tags can be added to different nodes by clicking on edit -> adding a tag to the tag line. 
  • You can search through all nodes that exist by clicking on the tag
  • You can add additional ways of categorization using Structure -> Taxonomy
  • Menu Tabs can be added by going to Structure -> Menu

  • Note that Google Reader has been discontinued.
  • You can see your RSS feed by clicking on the icon, but placement of icon can be dependent on theme. For instance, mine is on the bottom of the page. 
  • To initiate the RSS feed in Drupal, go to Extend -> Check Aggregator -> Install. To add a feed, go to your home page and then Tools -> Add Feed. Add the

  • We're now going to switch things up, because I found tutorials that cover Drupal 8 rather than the older Drupal 7. So, hopefully, the notes and the video won't be as different from now on.
