The ad in question appeared on TV commercials in South Africa in early March 2019

On March 26th 2018, a famous celebrity, Chance the Rapper, shed light on the controversy and described the ad as terribly racist

Public opinion was divided. Some did not believe that the advert was intentionally racist whilst the majority agreed that it was insensitive.

On March 28th 2018, Heineken pulled the commercial off air due to the backlash and gave the following statement.
