Style is:
- the characteristic way an author uses language to create literature.
- the result of the writer's habitual use of certain rhetorical patterns, including sentence length and complexity, word choice and placement, and punctuation.
- Use of figurative language: metaphor, simile, personification, and symbolism
- Author's voice

how to Best Annotate the essays
- Note elements of White's style: language, word choice, punctuation, symbolism, figurative language, historical references, the list goes on.
- Note the effect(s) of the elements of style.
- Let's look at the handout for guiding questions.
Goal= through thoughtful reading and annotations, you will begin to notice, appreciate, and be confident when discussing White's style.

IB Exam: IOC
The Individual Oral Commentary (IOC) will take place in December.
Process:
- 20 minutes to annotate and organize an oral commentary ( you will randomly pull 1 of 20 poems previously studied)
- 8 minute oral commentary (poem only)
- 2 minutes of follow-up questions based on poem/commentary
- 10 minute discussion on either White or Morrison (determined by the roll of a dice)
