Ideas for our Documentary

Why do we need more than one idea?

  • In order to make the best documentary possible, we need several different ideas that we can expand on.
  • By looking at each of the ideas we come up with, we can view the advantages and disadvantages of each potential topic.
  • After we have reviewed each benefit and drawback equally, we can decide which of our ideas is the best for our 5 minute opening sequence for our documentary.
  • The ideas we come up with need to be able to be narrowed down to a specific subject of research.

Ideas we came up with:

  1. Transport
  2. Pollution
  3. Sport
  4. Food
  5. Social Media
  6. College Life
  7. Safety and Security
  8. Exams
  9. Technology

Next step...

After brainstorming several different ideas for a subject we can base our documentary on, we now need to select three of those ideas and explain the benefits and drawbacks of them.

Technology

College Life
Sport

Advantages:

  1. Technology is a progressive and controversial issue, so it has lots of points to raise within a documentary.
  2. In college, there are many sources of technology, and some experts in this field. So it would be suitable for interviews.
  3. A vast majority of the students in our college own a technological device of some kind. Therefore, asking students for their opinions in the form of interviews would be easily achievable.

Disadvantages:

Technology

  1. It is a vast subject, so there is a lot of content that you would need to cover. We would need to narrow the subject down into a smaller, easier topic to discuss.
  2. The college mainly has computers, and not many other sources of technology. We would need to rely on students and experts to give insight into more sources of technology.

Advantages:

  1. As we are in a college, it is the perfect environment to review college life in. We have a range of students who can give their individual opinions on college life.
  2. Every college has teachers, and these teachers would be valid as 'experts', so we would not run out of experts.
  3. We would have no restrictions as we cannot leave college grounds anyway.

Disadvantages:

College Life

  1. Making a documentary on college life within a documentary would be quite simplistic and boring.
  2. The topic has no originality and would not stand out as a documentary.

Advantages:

  1. Sport is a very popular theme. Many people within college enjoy it and would therefore be a great topic to get peoples opinions on in the form of interviews.
  2. The sport department would be an excellent place to go for experts to interview, so we would not need to look very far for expert opinions.
  3. Sport is also a very controversial theme, so we could pick any subject within the sporting field and would be able to make a documentary on it with relative ease.

Disadvantages:

Sport

  1. The sport department itself is not a large part of the college, so we would be limiting ourselves for locations that we could film in.
  2. The college mainly has computers and classrooms, and only one gym. So sport is not a massive influence within our own college.
  3. There are only a few sporting coaches in college and if we chose a topic that questions the popularity of sport, they would be biased as they have a passion for the subject.

Final Decision

  • After reviewing each of our potential subjects, we decided to choose technology as our main theme for our documentary
  • The reason for this was that technology plays an incredible role within our college, our city, and the entire world. Therefore, there are countless enthusiastic subjects that we could talk about in our 5 minute sequence.
  • We have some excellent technology experts in our college, and arranging interviews with them will be easy and straightforward.

Technology:

Do we take it for granted?

I believe this is a very controversial issue, as there will be a difference in opinions between generations: those who were born in an age where technology wasn't as good as it is now, and those who were born in an age where technology is all they have ever known. Therefore, we can use this difference in opinions to interview a range of different people - experts and students alike - to make our point that technology is taken for granted in this age.
