Love Sick (Short Film Textual Analysis)

Editing Techniques in Chronological Order

Slow Motion: As the voiceover begins, the first few shots are shown in slow motion for a dramatic, yet comedic effect. This technique comes off as humorous as it shows some of the angry facial expressions from the woman in the establishing shot in a way that is made to look unflattering.

Especially amusing when the Protagonist gets hit in the face by the woman, as he didn't deliberately try to offend her - also very funny because of the non-diegetic voiceover is synchronous with the actions

Pause: The cinematography pauses for a few seconds whilst the narrative speaks to the audience, breaking the 4th wall. He interacts with the audience in this moment, giving him time to explain his feelings about being hit in the face whilst it is happening to him.

Shot Reverse Shot: There is a shot-reverse-shot interaction between the boy and the protagonist shows they acknowledge each other - despite no diegetic dialogue being exchanged between the two.

Ellipsis: From the park to the bus stop to move the narrative on and to make the timing of finding his next 'true love' more humorous - the comedic timing of announcing this only 30 seconds after saying that there was no way that he would find love again.

Montage: A series of shots of what the protagonist thinks will happen if he meets the brown-haired woman at the bus stop - he fantasises about kissing her, getting married to her and having a baby together. This is especially comedic as the two have not even talked to each other yet.

Match-on-action: There is a match-on-action running sequence that creates tension and excitement through the use of action codes. During this match-on-action sequence, the pace of the editing is very quick. The tense and hectic atmosphere created by these editing techniques is very unconventional for a film of the comedy genre and more stereotypical of the action genre - however the fact that a small situation is made out to be action and adrenaline fuelled adds to the humour.

Shot Reverse Shot: There is a shot-reverse-shot sequence at the traffic lights where the protagonist is waiting. The shot-reverse-shot editing technique is often used during conversations or used to create tension - and again this adds to the hilarity of the piece because the situation is so mundane and the creation of tension isunnecessary.

Slow Motion/Image Filter: There is a slow motion shot of the boy riding on his bike with a white filter over the top of it - the combination of these two editing techniques creates the effect of a faux-dream sequence. The over dramatisation of the whole narrative is put over the edge with this faux-dream sequence and really adds an extra humour element to the film.
