Lab Steps

After you finish each step, make sure I check it. You will get credit as you finish the steps in the lab.

 ① Coding the Alphabet

A = 00001 \\ B = 00010 \\ C = 00011 \\ \vdots

With your group, choose an english word and translate it into binary.

Don't forget to write the word in your notebook!

 ② Bread Board Basics

Use the breadboard to light up an LED!

Then answer theses questions in your lab notebook:

1. In the bread board are the columns connected?

2. What about the rows?

3. Draw a picture of your breadboard in your lab           notebook.

 ③ Build the LED Circuit

Play around with the bread board for a bit, and see if you can get 5 LEDs to light up.

Hint: Check the circuit diagram on the right!

4. Draw your circuit in your lab notebook. Be sure to label the Anode and the Cathode!

5. How many LEDs do you need to express every letter in the alphabet?

red is positive

black is negative

  ④ Sending Signals

Use the your LEDs to display the letters from the word you chose in ①

Take a picture of your circuit displaying each letter of the word you chose!

  ⑤ Hello World

It's a tradition in programming to have your first program display the phrase "hello world." Use your binary circuit to display the two words.

6. How are you going to show a space in binary?

  ⑥ Notebook

Be sure you answered all of the questions and drew the pictures as well.

At the end of the lab please answer the questions:
