Man City No.2 “very happy” to sign new contract extension until 2026

Man City goalkeeper Stephan Ortega, 32, has signed a contract extension.

The club announced on Monday (Aug. 8) that Ortega has signed a contract extension through 2026. The German international, who played for Armenia Bielefeld, 1860 Munich and Bielefeld, signed a three-year deal with City in 2022 as a free agent, and the extension will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the age of 34.

Ortega said: “I am very happy to stay at City for so long. This is a club that gives players everything they need to be the best they can be. I feel motivated and challenged every day and I have improved as a goalkeeper since I arrived two years ago,” said Ortega.

"My family has settled well here in England. I love everything about it, and signing the contract means I can now focus 100% on next season and beyond."

“This is a very important re-signing for the club,” said City manager Chiqui Behiristain, “Stephan is the best number two we have, offering quality, stability and 사설토토 experience. Our goalkeeping coach Xavi Manchisidor has always told me how good a goalkeeper he is. He has contributed greatly to our success since joining the club,” said the club's head coach, Xavi Mancisidor.

In his first season with the club, Ortega made 11 appearances in 2022-2023, including three league games, two Champions League games, and six FA Cup games, helping City to their first treble in the club's history.

In the 2023-2024 season, he made 20 appearances, including nine in the league and two in the Champions League, to help City win their fourth consecutive Premier League title due to an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.

Most notably, he pulled off a 'super save' against Tottenham on March 15, when he was one-on-one with 'Tottenham captain' Son Heung-min in the dying minutes of the second half to secure a 2-0 victory. The save was considered to be the difference between City and Arsenal in the title race. City manager Pep Guardiola was in despair when Son Heung-min was one-on-one with Ortega and realized the goal had been conceded, but he jumped to his feet and applauded when the ball hit Ortega's leg.

Ortega's save threw cold water on Tottenham's Champions League hopes. While City went on to win the title, Spurs finished fifth and missed out on Champions League qualification.
