Why should you care?

@vipulgupta2048

The difference between good and great is just a little extra effort

@vipulgupta2048

2016

  • Too naive, impressionable, and studious
  • Open to feedback & personal change
  • Optimistic & by the book
  • Didn't find the right people

@vipulgupta2048

2016

@vipulgupta2048

2017

  • Restarted ALiAS, started contributing to open-source
  • Still studious but worked on learning practical skills
  • Got a major project at the CRC with ALiAS team
  • Tried to do too many things at once.
  • Found mentors, guidance, and thankfully a little bit purpose

@vipulgupta2048

@vipulgupta2048

2018

  • Started focusing a lot more on open-source
  • Organized meetups for ALiAS, PyDelhi, volunteered for PyCon India
  • Expanded online & offline network
  • Worked with Sugar Labs for 5 months in GSoC
  • Amity helped with HackMIT to access opportunities out of reach

@vipulgupta2048

@vipulgupta2048

2019

  • Became organizer for PyDelhi
  • Mentored 16+ students to participate in the ALiAS GSoC AMA program.
  • Contributed in building a new validation framework for Scrapy
  • Even more talks, hackathons wins, workshops
  • Started Mixster, first-year turnover was 16k
  • Started looking for roles. Miserable first attempt.

@vipulgupta2048

2020

  • Mixster grew. Team of 11, turnover 1.4 lakh INR, retained by 3 companies
  • After 7 rounds of interviews, finally rejected but then rehired by the company I am working for, starting in April 2020
  • Financially independent. Wrote about it.

  • Judging hackathons now, grew my role at PyCon India

  • Then the pandemic came...
  • Graduated from Amity. Online.
  • Thought to travel to Europe on my own but ended up canceling 7+ flights.
  • Joined balena and worked remotely. Wrote about it.

A record of everything I did for the last 4 years

"How did I reach here"
"How did I become job ready"

If you ask others, they will say it's either programming skills, projects I did, opportunities I had from the start, talking at big conferences, organizing meetups, having mentors, being with the right group, or just blind luck.

@vipulgupta2048

"How did I reach here"
"How did I become job ready"

If you ask me, I would agree.

Because whatever the reason might be that extra bit of work is what made the difference. And, I wanted to let my journey at Amity be an example to show that it isn't magic. I believe you can do it too.

@vipulgupta2048

So, why should you care?

@vipulgupta2048

Because, your first job is cruical

  • Experience & mentorship
  • Learning critical life skills
  • Path to the next goal to find better work and designation
  • And, of course, money.

@vipulgupta2048

Your steps for job readiness

  • Finding your group at college. This is the key.
  • Finding seniors & mentors to guide you.
  • Finding a community to contribute towards.
  • Building credibility with teachers & college to support you.
  • Be open to feedback from all sources.
  • Build the ability to sell yourself in the job market
  • Always keep looking for new opportunities
  • Sharpen those soft skills to talk, write and lead when it matters
  • Build skills, work on your craft, & the resume will take care of itself
  • Contribute to open-source ethically, not for the money.
