Why a volunteer program?
Engagement and Team Building
Engagement leads to:
- Higher productivity
- Higher customer ratings
- Higher profitability
- Lower turnover
- Lower absenteeism
It strengthens workplace relationships, and increases the positive feelings of an employee to the employer.
Recruitment & Retention
Why a volunteer program?
- Competitive job market: job seekers are looking for perks like volunteer programs and want companies with values in line with their own
- High costs of turnover: replacing a salaried employee incurs a company cost of up to 213% of that employee's salary.* Additionally, turnover negatively effects productivity, morale, and culture.

-
HandsOn Bay Area

- organizes large scale events for $85/person OR
- provides calendar of opportunities for $5/volunteer
-
VolunteerMatch
- searchable matching platform costs $33K annually (for 10k+ employees) plus $4,500/yr. for single sign on
UCSF Volunteers:
Project Options and Funding
- B: 10% FTE Coordinator, Marketing, plus events managed by HandsOn Bay Area = $42K
- A: Recommended - 20% FTE Coordinator plus Marketing = $33K
The LDP Practicum team recommends implementing Proposal A because of the low annual cost to have an in-house administrator maintain the UCSF Volunteers program.
- C: 10% FTE Coordinator, Marketing, plus one-year VolunteerMatch contract = $61.5K
Note: Assumes AA III salary @ $60K/yr. plus 50% benefits, and Marketing (including Communications) @ $15K for first year.
