Isometric

Isometric

A method for visually representing 3D objects in 2D in technical and engineering drawings.

  • Iso: Greek, equal measure
  • The angles on X/Y/Z axes are 120º
  • Free of optical distortion
  • Technique  for design since 1920s
    • Used by artists, architects, engineers

Isometric Limitations

  • Objects do not appear larger of smaller
    • Loss of realistic perspective
  • Difficult to gauge depth
  • Penrose stairs
    • Impossible object created by Lionel Penrose
    • Infinitely ascending/descending

Penrose Triangle
The Devil's Pitchfork

Isometrics in Games

  • Before 3D graphics supported
  • Variations of 2D and tile-based graphics
    • 3/4 perspective
    • 2.5D
    • pseudo-3D
  • Less intensive method for rendering 3D
