italki teachers’ on-line meet-up!
toady's topic
"teacher-friend"
-
- do you consider yourself a friend with your students?
-
- do you ever contact a student on occasions other than learning-related (wishing them a happy birthday, for example)?
- - How many friends can one have?
Do you remember all of your students – names, learning goals, life circumstances?
And after this student stops taking lessons – would you remember him (or her) after he renews the conversation in a year’s time?
-
- What is the difference between a teacher and a friend?
-
- can there be a hierarchy in friendship?
- - is it ok to get paid for a friendly chat? What kind of friend is a paid friend?
-
- “involuntary unlicensed psychotherapist” – when we approach our students too closely, we often are exposed to his/her hesitations, important life choices (as it happens very often, learning a language is liable to be connected to serious life circumstances) – how do we deal with it?
-
- what if the friendship is not meant to be?
I mean, the student chooses the teacher and decides whether to continue learning with him\her or not. Could the choice be mutual? Should it be mutual? Can a teacher "fire" a student, in Murilo's words? Let's discuss our concerns and share our experiences about it.
- - and let’s remember to reserve some time for personal stories :)
