A "GOOD"
TEACHER

  • - What makes one a good teacher – student\teacher perspective
  • - Do you consider yourself a good teacher?
  • - Tips\advice for being a good teacher
  • - How can we tell if a student is satisfied with your teaching method?
  • - How can we know we’ve gotten better at teaching from when we started to now
  • - Add yours!

DIFFICULT STUDENTS

  • students that cancel with a short notice,
  • no show ups,
  • not constant or those who tend to show up once in several weeks
  • unwilling to actually learn the language,
  • too needy student
  • not doing home works! )))

  • silent students (I'd say it's the worst!!!)

  • students who insist on strategy you disagree with

TEACHING
no matter what

  • teaching when you are sick,
  • teaching when you have a flood
  • teaching when internet fails
  • teaching after you had a fight
  • teaching when you are starving (no time to eat – did it happen to you?)
  • teaching when your child\spouse\friend really wants to talk very badly
  • just… you know - teaching when you’d rather do something else – you name what ;)

LEARNING
FROM STUDENTS

LEARNING TO BE A BETTER TEACHER

  • The “art” of questioning and correcting mistakes

LEARNING TO BE A BETTER LINGUIST

  • Things we became aware of about our own language

LEARNING TO BE A BETTER PERSON

  • Learning about the student's land and culture
  • Things we realized are unique (or weird :) ) in our own culture
  • Learning facts about our students professional occupation
  • learning to be a good conversation partner - listening skills and empathy

ONLY TARGET LANGUAGE?

There are some "holy cows" in language-teaching, one of them - using only the target language in the classroom. There are advocates and haters of the approach. Which side are you at? :)

  • Do you use only the target language with your students?
  • If yes, how do you work with the beginners?
  • If no - when, why and how do you use another, common language with the student? (and what is this common language?)
  • Have you observed positive or negative effects of either way?
  • Using only target language when we are forced to - when there is no other common language with the student - did it happen to you?

10 min
of inspiration

we start at 18:30

see you very soon! :)

italki teachers’ on-line meet-up!

toady's topic
"teacher-friend"

  • - do you consider yourself a friend with your students?

  • - do you ever contact a student on occasions other than learning-related (wishing them a happy birthday, for example)?

  • - How many friends can one have?

  • Do you remember all of your students – names, learning goals, life circumstances?

  • And after this student stops taking lessons – would you remember him (or her) after he renews the conversation in a year’s time?

  • - What is the difference between a teacher and a friend?

  • - can there be a hierarchy in friendship?

  • - is it ok to get paid for a friendly chat? What kind of friend is a paid friend?

  •

  • - “involuntary unlicensed psychotherapist” – when we approach our students too closely, we often are exposed to his/her hesitations, important life choices (as it happens very often, learning a language is liable to be connected to serious life circumstances) – how do we deal with it?

  • - what if the friendship is not meant to be?
I mean, the student chooses the teacher and decides whether to co
ntinue learning with him\her or not. Could the choice be mutual? Should it be mutual? Can a teacher "fire" a student, in Murilo's words? Let's discuss our concerns and share our experiences about it.

  • - and let’s remember to reserve some time for personal stories :)
