- a document that describes how the data is to be managed during a research project – and after its completion
- identifies problems at an early stage
- identifies costs and resources needed
- monitors data activities throughout the project
Contents of a DMP
- Who is responsible for data management during and after the project
- What resources are needed
- How to ensure that data is well-organized and sufficiently documented (metadata)
- Volume and type(s) of data
- How to ensure that data is compatible with ethical and legal requirements
- Where the data is stored and backed up during the project
- How the data will be archived and made accessible in the long term
