Vera Ellen Wang

Vera Ellen Wang was born on June 27, 1949 in New York City. She grew up on Manhattan's Upper east Side and lived a very pampered life as an adolescent.

As a child she attended the Elite Chapin School and the School of American Ballet. She studied abroad in Paris during her sophomore year in college, but returned to the United States to finish her art history degree. Vera also took up figure skating and was very good at it, but she shelved figure skating after deciding to work for Vogue in 1971.

Biography

She became distressed by the lack of wedding gowns available; so she sketched out a design and then proceeded to have it tailored for $10,000. Soon she opened up her own boutique(with a little financial backing from her father)!

Inspiration

Vera Wang and her brand first received international attention during the 1994 Olympics when she designed a hand-beaded ensemble for a figure skater named Nancy Kerrigan. She has a popular line of elegant evening wear and her bridal wear is being sold at over 55 upscale retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. After that she required a rather large Hollywood following and her fashions were frequently worn to film premieres.

Recognition

She launched her first fragrance and published a wedding guide in 2001. Her business now includes jewelry, fragrance, lingerie, and products for the home.

In 2006 Khol's and Vera Wang reached a deal to produce a less-expensive line of ready-to-wear clothing exclusively for Khols, the line is called "Simply Vera".

Business

Through the years Vera has won a couple of awards. These awards are: CDFA's Women's Wear Designer of the Year Award, Andre Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award, Chinese American Planning Council's Honoree of the Year Award, and the Girl Scout Council's Woman of Distinction Award.
