New April Things in Curricula
4/24/17
a11y comes to web-dev-001
- introduce idea of a11y early, and demo basic best practices
- add assignments where students refactor HTML to make it accessible
- audited all code in web-dev-001 to make it practice what we preach
- Next steps: web-dev-002 and introing a11y basics for js
Deployment & CI come to React
- show students how to deploy apps to Netlify, have TravisCI deploy to Netlify, and register and set up custom domains
- Paves way for much clearer path through final capstone
Revamped full stack capstone comes to FEWD-201
- 11 assignment final capstone project
- more scaffolding, deliverables, and prescriptions
- No longer leave students on their own to figure out how to create/deploy a full stack app
- Deploy client and API separately
- Should help students move through full stack capstone more quickly and with more consistently high quality projects
Lesson on building portfolio site comes to FEWD-201
- Before, students had a goal to create a portfolio, but no guidance.
- This led to lots of wheel spinning and inconsistent results.
- Now: 6 assignments with clear deliverables and steps.
- Showcase good portfolios
- Message is don't reinvent the wheel. Borrow from existing layouts/designs.
- No longer leave students on their own to figure out
Coming next
- Smoothing out of Node (today or tomorrow)
- Flex and full-time back on the same curriculum.
- Capstones removed from curricula and go into a separate projects phase
- Rewriting full stack phase (Phase 2) to be more "full stacky"
