Digipak Analysis #3
By: Muhammad Faraz Malik
This is the front cover of Katy Perry's digipak for "Prism". The first thing on it that catches your attention is the beam of light coming from behind Katy. A beam of light signifies hope, purity, serenity and therefore, the cover says a lot about this album. It immediately tells the audience about the style and genre of the music. Coming to the main image of the artist, Katy Perry looks really innocent and pure. Her make-up and hair look really fresh and elegant. By just looking at the front of the digipak, the audience will know that the entire ideology of this album is based on innocence and purity. Katy's lips are somewhat open and she's looking directly in the camera which makes the audience feel connected to the artist and hence, persuade them to buy the album.
The artist's name and the name of the album are both very prominent, the font is very simple and everything about this cover seems refreshing. The addition of the sunflowers and the meadow behind Katy altogether compliment the main picture.
The name of the artist and the album name are both written in the same font on the CD as well, thus creating a link between the front and CD inlay. The CD of this album is very basic. The record company, the track list and copyrights has been listed in a very simple font on the CD instead of the back. The hollow-graphic and the rainbow effect has again created a link between the front and CD inlay. So far, everything is complimenting each other and is following one overall theme.
A Prism is a triangular object and since the name of this album is prism, a triangal is made out of the album's tracklist. This was really creative and interesting and by just looking at this, the audience would want to buy the album. Again, another innocent picture of Katy Perry is spotted on the back, but in this picture Katy's expressions seem to be saying a lot and they hence, create suspicion and curiosity. A rainbow has been spotted on the cover, the CD inlay and the back and hence, it creates the question of its importance amongst the audience and it urges them to find out about its significance.
Lastly the inlay. The colour of the inlay is a really pretty orange, hence creating a link with meadows and sunflowers, indication peace, positivety and purity. A prism is again made and inside the prism the album name is written in a very large font, however even though the album name is readable, it's not standing out the way it should. There's other detail mentioned on the inlay, telling the audience more about the album.
