Open-Loop Tracking for GNSS Radio Occultations

Why use open-loop?

Traditional PLL fails under low SNR, high-dynamic conditions, which are characteristic of signals traveling through the lower troposphere.

During rising occultations, ray tangent points may reach >10km before a signal can be acquired.

L2P

Only tracked in closed-loop mode, since its delay requirements (<<30m) cannot be satisfied by open-loop tracking. [Kursinki et al Rising and Setting...]
