In the computer controlled industry, the reliability of electrical & electronic devices has been challenged by attack from corrosive gaseous contaminants present in the operating environment, causing failures ranging from short circuits & thermal failure to pitting corrosion & metal loss.

Contaminants
The contaminants can broadly be divided into two categories, namely those generated by indoor activities, and those generated by outdoor activities.
The first category consists of contaminants such as ammonia, chlorine, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and Volatile organic compounds.
The second category consists of contaminants such as sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, bromine, various oxides of nitrogen, moisture, and in rare cases, asbestos.
