JavaScript is succeeding very well where in an environment where Java was a  total failure.

Java wasn't the language to do that because a beginner needed to know way too much in order to get started.

They wanted ordinary people to write amazing application to add them to their browser

They wanted this language before the release of their newest browser

...and so Javascript was born in 10 days.

Netscape took that language and shipped it to the world without ever having developed an application to test it.
