How does my music video, magazine advert and digipak use, develop or challenge conventions?

opening sequence & logo incorporation

When analysing openings, I identified that Banks- Fall Over used a panning establishing shot to open followed by the use of the artist's logo in a white font on a dark backdrop. I mimicked this within my own opening.

USED

Banks uses her logo on all of her media products to make it easily identifiable and give herself an identity. I used this same technique throughout my media products.

MISE EN SCENE- LOCATIONS

In Banks- Fall Over, the location of a bed was used. However, the lighting gave the location a dark feel which I developed within my own into a bright white location that juxtaposed the dark woodland setting. As I was only using two locations, I decided that this effect would create a better contrast between them and break the video up.

DEVELOPED

In Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart video she is set in dense woodland which gives a dramatic effect. I adopted this location but chose a morning setting in one scene, which allowed light to come streaming through the trees in a cinematic way.

In contrasting shots, shooting took place at night time with an LED light used to light my performer. This gave to effects to the same location and is therefore a development on the initial location inspiration, which seems to be shot on an afternoon.

MISE EN SCENE- costume and props

Ellie Goulding wears Dr Marten boots in her Beating Heart video to walk through the forest. I incorporated the exact same boots into my own costume within the same setting.

Also, they are shot as a close up against the forest floor, just as Ellie's are.

DEVELOPED

In Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart video, her setting appears smokey and murky, however I didn't identify that any form of smoke was added to the location as there was no movement to the backdrop.

I developed this effect by actually adding strong smoke through the use of coloured smoke grenades. These added a dramatic effect to the ending of my video.

MISE EN SCENE- colour

I identified a cohesive use of cool colour tinting shots throughout Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart video and also Birdy's Shelter video. The cool colours give an uninviting, cold feel which creates an atmosphere within the video. Both songs speak of longing swell as the song I chose, which lead me to incorporate this into my own video. Also, the cohesiveness ties all shots together.

USED

This use of cool colours also translates into the colour scheme of the magazine advert. I adopted my cool colour scheme to my magazine also.

 camera- performance

In Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart video, close up performance shots are used. I adopted this convention to my own, using a close up performance of the words 'my thunder' as a match-on-action shot. The backdrop is an out of focus woodland scene also, created by a large aperture setting.

USED

In Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart video, she varies between giving direct address to the camera while performing and looking away. I also varied gave my performer instruction to vary her address to and from the camera between shots.

 camera- narrative

In both Bastille's Overjoyed and Birdy's Light Me Up video, there is a strong narrative that runs within the video that tells a story to the audience. I deliberately didn't include this within my video as my audience research indicated that this was not a preference.

Instead, I focused on moods and emotions within my video through considered use of mise en scene. This includes location, colours, costume, props etc.
