Welcome!!
My name is Jamie and I am so glad you're here! This school year is my 21st year of teaching! What?!! I was a business education teacher for several years in Idaho before moving into the K-12 librarian position at my current school in Montana.
I live in a tiny town in southwest Montana with my husband (who is also a teacher) and our teenage daughters.

I found the oils on my own in 2014 during a very difficult period in my life. I was desperately researching and seeking help for mystery health issues (which later developed into autoimmune disease) and the work stress, drama, and burnout I’d been dealing with. When I got the oils in my hands, I felt hope for the first time in a long time. They cheered me, grounded me, helped my immune system and helped me feel more in control. And bonus...they helped us clear out toxic products in our home and at school. My oils and oil-infused products became a way of life for me and I am so thankful for that!

The oils changed my life by opening the door and my mind to naturally supporting my body, mind, and spirit. Best purchase ever!!

As an educator, I know the stress teachers are under to prepare their students, meet standards, please parents, effectively differentiate, meet the needs of every unique student and dare I say, be held to a higher standard in many communities. Teaching is such a rewarding career but it comes with a lot of pressure too. The oils have helped me and so many of my teacher friends have better ways to cope with the ups and downs of teacher life.

In this class, I’m going to be sharing what I know works for help with stress, energy, staying well and really being able to be your best self both in and outside of the school walls.

I’ll be here tonight to answer your questions in the comments and chat with you during the class.

Oily Teacher Ways
There are so many ways to use oils to enhance your teaching days!! My advice is to play with your oils, be curious, and try new ways of using them.
Using your oils consistently before, during and after school hours will yield you the best results.

😊HAPPY DAY TIP: I diffuse and apply a variety of oils while I'm getting ready for school each morning and I find this helps me (and my family) set the tone for a positive and healthy day.

🙌Here's how you can use your oils throughout your day:
AROMATICALLY: One of the best ways to benefit (and help others benefit) is to use a diffuser to fill the air with the power of the oils. If your school won't allow you to diffuse, see if diffusing after hours would be okay since this will clean up the air and refresh your room.

Other ways to bring the aroma of the oils into your day and/or your classroom are to make a room spritz (recipes coming in later posts) or one of my personal favorites, just become a walking human diffuser. 😂 To do this, you simply wear your oils. I will often add a drop of oil to my hands, swirl around and apply topically to my skin and my clothes so that as I circulate the room, I bring the aroma with me.

TOPICALLY: This simply means to place a drop of oil on the skin. The oils have extremely tiny molecules that enter your skin easily and quickly. Follow the directions on the bottle and when called for, dilute your oils with a carrier oil such as olive, jojoba, almond or another nut or seed oil. When you start using the oils, remember, more is not better. Just one or two drops is all you need.

INTERNALLY: Many of Young Living's oils can be used internally. Young Living’s oils that are safe for consumption are labeled as “Vitality” oils. Some may choose to use certain Vitality oils as daily supplements while using others during times when they need increased immune support.

🍃For example, I’ve been using Thyme Vitality and Thieves Vitality daily for the last couple of weeks to help support my immune system.

What's That Smell?!
First, let's be practical here....school's can be pretty smelly!

👃You have the toxic smells like new gym seal, desk cleaner and whatever is coming from the chemistry lab. You have the stinky smells of sweaty shoes, body odor, wet coats and so much more! And then there are the mystery odors that you know you'll eventually find such as that old carton of milk in little Sally's locker.
Yep, kids are smelly. And when we group them all up in a room with minimal air flow...it can be overpowering!

So what can we do to encourage cleaner, fresher classrooms without harming our lungs or creating negative side effects on the learning environment?

-->First, we can toss the commercialized sprays, gel plug-ins, and other products that are full of toxins and synthetic fragrances that are doing more harm than good. Often these options only mask the smell, fade quickly, are filling the air with bad-for-us stuff rather than neutralizing it.
-->Second, we can switch to a diffuser. The power of essential oils and water go a lot farther than you might think. **Some districts do not allow diffusers during the school day or at all. Be sure to check if there are any rules about this in your school. One option might be to diffuse after hours to clear the air. It really depends on your particular school and district.
***Please note that many "essential oils" on the market are filled with chemicals to dilute them so companies can make more money or so that chemically altered aromas will stay in the air longer. This defeats the purpose of trying to get healthy, so please just know that I'm only referring to Young Living oils for the purposes of this class and for enjoying the many benefits of pure, correctly distilled essential oils.

TIP: if you're allowed to diffuse, consider diffusing pleasant-smelling oils like Thieves, Citrus Fresh, Lemon, Stress Away and so forth so that you're less likely to have someone complain about your diffuser.

For a super simple start to diffusing, try adding 6-8 drops of Purification or Citrus Fresh essential oil in your diffuser to help clear the air after your kiddos return from gym class or recess.

More Diffuser Ideas for the Classroom:
📝Wake Up 3 drops Grapefruit (or any citrus oil you like) 3 drops Spearmint
📝Let's Calm Down (i.e. stop tattle-telling) 3 drops Lavender 3 drops Bergamot
📝Focus & Do Your Best 3 drops Peppermint 3 drops Rosemary

When diffusing isn’t an option, a DIY air freshener spray is a wonderful option when combating those funky lingering smells. And remember, you can be a human diffuser too!

📝DIY Room Freshener Spray Recipe ( for 8-ounce glass spray bottle):
20 drops Purification
15 drops Lemon
Distilled Water
Add oils to spray bottle and fill with water. Gently shake to mix. *optional for a quick-drying option add a splash of rubbing alcohol or witch hazel **get creative with your oil combinations in your spritzer.

Another way to help keep the room fresh without a diffuser is to use toxin-free cleaners and products that are both effective and safe for kids.

+Keep a spray bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner in your room for all surfaces, windows, light switches, and anything else sticky fingers touch.
📝To whip this up, add a capful or two of Thieves Household Cleaner to a 16 oz spray bottle full of water and enjoy the cleaning power and wonderful aroma. I know you spend a ton of money on your classroom, so I'm happy to say that this is likely the cheapest and longest-lasting thing you'll buy for your classroom....ever!

+Homemade Thieves Wipes For Quick Clean Up!
📝DIY Thieves Wipes Recipe Mix
2.5 cups distilled water and
2 capfuls Thieves Household Cleaner (optional: add 5-10 drops Lemon or Citrus Fresh essential oil).
Cut a roll of paper towels in half and place one half in a glass container with a lid (I like the 1-gallon Anchor Hocking jar available at most stores and online). Pour the solution over the paper towels (at this point, the softened cardboard center will easily pull out of the center of the roll). Let them sit for 30-60 minutes to fully absorb and distribute the solution. Voila!

+Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier Pump by the door helps encourage immune support for everyone and it pushes fresher scents into the air.

Turn Off Your Brain...& Get Some SLEEP!
Daily stressors, late-night grading and the mental load we carry can begin to take a toll on our sleep! Am I right?!!

One of the best ways to combat feeling drained, emotional and irrational is to get enough sleep. Plus...sleep is key to having a healthy immune response. You can and should use your oils to help you with your bedtime routine.

MOM TIP: I diffuse in my daughters' rooms every night during the school year and it makes a huge difference in their quality of sleep. (Thieves for immune support or lavender for relaxation).

💤Start by setting the tone for bed. Get your diffuser set up and running an hour or so before bed so that you don't choose to skip it because you're too tired. Also, don't forget to turn off your phone/iPad/email and let yourself power down for an hour or so before bed so that your body knows sleep is coming.

Here are some great diffuser recipes to try:
📝Be Still My Sleep 4 drops Lavender 2 drops Cedarwood
📝Good Night, Sleep Tight 3 drops Lavender 3 drops Stress Away
📝Peaceful Slumber 2 drops Peace & Calming 2 drops Lavender

💤Apply your favorite relaxing oils topically. My favorite place to apply oils before bed is to my neck, temples, wrists and/or feet.

Oils I love for sleep include Lavender, Tranquil, Peace & Calming, Cedarwood, Stress Away, Bergamot, Valerian, RutaVala.

TIP: Remember, the key to finding success with the oils is to be consistent and try different oils and blends until you find what works for you.

+SleepEssence Supplement If your lack of sleep is getting out of hand, it may be time to try SleepEssence supplement. SleepEssence contains four powerful Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ essential oils that have unique sleep-enhancing properties in a softgel vegetarian capsule for easy ingestion. Combining lavender, vetiver, valerian, and Ruta graveolens essential oils with the hormone melatonin—a well-known sleep aid—SleepEssence is a natural way to enable a full night's rest.

No Time For Sub Plans...Immune Support
We all know that it's way more work for a teacher to stay home if they're sick. With sub plans, getting behind on grading and putting out any fires from having a sub, it makes it really hard to take the time you need to feel better. The best way to avoid all of this is to keep your body and immune system functioning at their peak.

🧠We don't always think of our immune systems when we think of our emotional health either, but have you ever noticed how you or a loved one handle things when coming down with something? If you were to take note, you'd likely notice that there were low, scattered and bummer feelings prior to the onset of your illness. This is simply because your body and mind were compromised (kinda like when a three-year-old really needs a nap).

Of course, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with adequate sleep, healthy foods and daily movement is key, but it's also nice to have tools that go that extra step to support us.

🙌That's why we have Thieves, a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils. Inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals used while robbing the dead and dying. Thieves is one of Young Living’s most popular products.

🍃How do we use Thieves to support our immune systems?
Diffusing is a very efficient way to get the power of Thieves into the air. If you are allowed to diffuse in your school, you can get that diffuser going 15-20 minutes before class starts or diffuse it after the school day ends to benefit the air in your classroom. (continued! -->)

I diffuse Thieves daily in the school library and in my opinion, it helps me and my students while keeping a cheery atmosphere.

Creating a roller bottle blend is also a very effective way to use Thieves. Each morning roll on the bottom of your feet. You can roll this blend on your wrists, chest or any skin on the body, just be sure to spot check your skin for sensitivity.

📝Roller Bottle Recipe for a 10ml Bottle: 15-20 drops of Thieves Essential Oil Top off with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil.
Push roller top on and mix by gently turning the bottle. *optional: lessen the drops to 12-15 and add 4-5 drops of Oregano or Thyme essential oil to add an extra kick of immune support.

☕️Thieves Tea Recipe: Add a drop or two of Thieves Vitality (same oil blend, it just has a different label!) in hot water with honey. TIP: Make sure water is slightly cooled from boiling so keep the therapeutic properties of the oils.

☕️Immune Boosting Tea Recipe: 1 drop of Thieves Vitality, 1 drop of Lemon Vitality, 1 drop of Copaiba Vitality, 2 tsp raw honey
Drop oils and honey into mug and swirl. Pour hot water over and stir.

☕️These tea recipes are excellent ways to start and/or end your day.

💧Some other Immune Supporting Oils I use regularly include:
+ImmuPower (I use this one at bedtime because it has a lot of cumin)
+Exodus II (TIP: you can mix a few drops of this with Rose Ointment in a small glass jar and apply it to the bottom of your nostrils to clean the air as you breathe it in). +Melrose
+R.C.
+Thyme
+Oregano

Favorite Immune Supporting Products I just have to mention:
Super C - A good quality C vitamin is one of the keys to staying well and should be taken for daily maintenance. Our Super C is delicious and easy for the whole family to take.

ImmuPro - I love this daily immune supplement. It's a delicious little chewable packed full of so many immune supporting ingredients. A little about it: This power-packed formula combines naturally-derived immune-supporting Ningxia wolfberry polysaccharides with a unique blend of reishi, maitake, and agaricus blazei mushroom powders to deliver powerful antioxidant activity to help reduce the damaging effects of oxidative stress from free radicals.

Inner Defense - this stuff is the bomb! You take it when you need it - like an SOS when you feel you've been exposed to the crud. I always have at least two bottles on hand during the school year because when you need, you need it!

Life 9 - I believe this is the best probiotic on the market. My whole family takes it to help keep our microbiome healthy and balanced. Since we started focusing on this, it has cut down dramatically on our episodes of the dreaded stomach bugs that run rampant in schools.

Maintaining Focus + Clarity
Student focus... In a room full of kids it can be difficult to get everyone focused and on the same page.

Diffusing oils like Frankincense, Lemon and Peppermint can add a lively pep to the afternoon lesson for everyone including you. Remember you can always use a spritz bottle or apply the oils and be a human diffuser if you need to.

Teacher focus... How often do you have a plan for the day and then something derails you? Maybe a staff meeting? An IEP meeting you spaced, a student meltdown or a parent issue? Or maybe it's just the same old conversation you've had 100 times in the teachers' lounge. We can never plan for these things. But we can plan NOT to let them derail our focus and clarity.

PRO FOCUS TIP: Know that these random situations above will show up in your days and try to derail you here and there. Don't let them. Use your oils to help you let go of those moments and get back on track. Apply your favorite focus oils such as Clarity or Peppermint and be amazed as you maximize those short increments of prep time during your school day to knock out some of that take-home grading. It's totally worth it to free up some of your evening time!

Speaking of that...everyone knows that a teacher's day often isn't finished at 4:00 (or at least I hope they do). After the dishes are done and the family is tucked away, you're often staying up late grading papers, working on professional development credits or putting together a new unit. When you need a second wind to keep the productivity going, we have you covered!

A great way to get that extra bit of energy and focus is to apply or diffuse oils such as Clarity or Peppermint. I love to mix Peppermint + Orange in the diffuser when I need an extra boost.

TIP: opening and sniffing a bottle of DiGize is one of the most amazing things you can do to get your mind rolling.

📝Grading Focus Roll-On Recipe 3 drops Rosemary, 3 drops Peppermint, 3 drops Vetiver. Fill remaining roller with fractionated coconut oil (or carrier of your choice). Roll across your collar bone and bust through a few more papers!

No More Drama
🙌Blends for Workplace Drama and Negativity🙌

Even as grown-up professionals, our work environment can be filled with negativity and drama. And since teaching is a work of passion, it makes sense that we don’t always see eye to eye, agree with certain standards, or even feel safe to share our ideas.

Luckily, these moments tend to pass...especially when we let them. And oils can help us with our mindset so we can let that stuff go.

I find it helpful to use oils before I start my day to set an intention of the person I want to be at school, why I actually go there (to help students) and what kind of impact I want to make (I'm not saying I'm perfect, but this helps a lot). Oils like Joy, Transformation, Magnify Your Purpose, and Believe are some of my favorites for this purpose.

Rather than getting caught up in any drama or negativity, here are some oils to help you separate yourself and stay in a more positive mindset:

+Trying to avoid negativity? Say hello to White Angelica. Apply a drop the palm of your hands and then swirl around with your other hand. Then apply to the crown of your head, neck, shoulders and finish off by applying down the sides of your body (on your clothes). It's like a shield from negativity, I swear.

+Angry? Try Tranquil! This blend takes me from adrenaline coursing through my veins to calm and letting go in less than two minutes.

+Frustrated? Try Awaken! A collection of five different blends (Joy, Forgiveness, Present Time, Dream Catcher, and Harmony) this blend works to support self-awareness and encourages creativity while balancing the energy centers of your body.

+Apathetic? Cedarwood is your oil! Commonly used to stimulate the limbic region of the brain (that's the center of emotions), and for its calming and purifying properties. Use this oil to get unstuck and back to being inspired.

Help....I Need Some Energy!
Maintaining energy throughout the teaching day can be tough (let alone having enough at the end of the day for everything and everyone else). The best way to maintain your energy is to guard it and have firm boundaries around what you will and won't give your energy to. It's very easy to end up giving your energy to the wrong situations.

The after-lunch slump can be rough. By diffusing a simple blend of Lemon + Peppermint (or wearing or spritzing it), you can create an uplifting aroma that will help pretty much anyone get a little pep back!

When we are feeling exhausted it can be easy to reach for mega doses of caffeine, but too much of it can be hard on our adrenals (don't get me wrong - I'm a coffee lover who practices moderation) - especially when you are crawling into bed and your body still hasn’t processed the caffeine (your body is sleeping, but your brain isn't). Yikes!

Ningxia Red is a wonderful alternative that won't leave your bladder full which is handy for teachers. You only need 1-2 ounces and you’re good to go!

+Ningxia Red is a whole-body supplement, with a plethora of health benefits, antioxidants, energy support, superfoods- all without unnecessary filler, synthetics, and sugar overload. *I drink my NingXia in the morning, but if you're having afternoon slumps, it's great to drink it around 2 or 3 p.m.

Some other energy helpers include:
+NingXia Zing give yous a hydrating splash of essential oil-infused goodness using the same whole-fruit wolfberry puree found in our popular superfruit supplement, NingXia Red®. We add sparkling water, pear and blackberry juices, and a hint of Lime and Black Pepper essential oils for a dynamic, unique taste. You’ll enjoy a refreshing boost that’s full of flavor without artificial flavors and preservatives.

+NingXia Nitro gives you a quick pick-me-up without sugar or caffeine overload. Infused with essential oils, botanical extracts, D-ribose, Korean ginseng, and green tea extract, NingXia Nitro supports alertness, as well as cognitive and physical fitness.

+SuperB is another way to support energy throughout the day. Our Super B complex contains all 8 essential B Vitamins, with a natural source of folate (from lemon peels) and methylcobalamin (one of the best sources of B12) for B12. This is ideal for those who cannot process other forms of folate.

Healthy Snacks
It can be nearly impossible to maintain a healthy diet while working in a school. It seems there are always treats flooding the teacher’s lounge and countless early morning meetings. What we eat most definitely affects how we feel physically and emotionally and since most of us want to feel better, have more energy and have more joyful mindsets, making healthy food choices most of the time is key to feeling good all the way around.

Keeping a supply of healthy foods and beverages (that aren’t a 5th cookie or cup of coffee for the day) in your room can be extremely beneficial to your mood and stamina. One of the beautiful things about Young Living is that they are about so much more than essential oils, they are about living a healthy life in all respects.

TIP: When you're feeling tempted to eat that thing you promised yourself you wouldn't eat, go smell an oil like Peppermint, Lemon or Orange and visualize yourself being strong and sticking to your original intention.

Some healthy snacks to keep on hand:

+Stock up on Einkorn Granola for snacking on when you are pressed for time in between classes- it will help satisfy your cravings for sweets, but help with necessary proteins to keep you moving and energized. This stuff is so delicious.

+Gary’s True Grit Wolfberry Crisp Bar – Chocolate Coated combines wholesome grains, fruits, nuts, and whey into a convenient snack-sized bar that is perfect to take on the go. Drizzled in rich dark chocolate and flavored with sweet coconut and wolfberries, these taste like a decadent treat but are packed with satisfying nutrition. Einkorn flour, quinoa, flaxseed, whey crisp, pea protein crisp, and almonds provide complex carbohydrates, protein, and fiber that will keep the whole family energized and full.

+Slique Shakes with Almond Milk. Our Slique Shake is naturally sweetened with Stevia, organic coconut palm sugar, wolfberries, and strawberries. The formula also includes pea protein, quinoa, wolfberry, pumpkin seed protein, and alfalfa grass juice, making it not only a tasty protein shake but an excellent source of dietary fiber as well. Slique Shake also includes a fruit and vegetable blend that provides essential vitamins and minerals that many meal replacement options don’t offer. It's so good!!

All The Emotions
Did you know that the average classroom teacher will make more than 1,500 educational decisions every school day? (from busyteacher.org) That's a lot! All of these decisions can be emotionally draining.

Teaching is a highly emotional career choice with each school day consisting of extreme highs, lows, and everything in between. We've grown attached to students, wanted to save students, lost students, felt like we were giving more to our students than our own children, cheered for students, been disappointed in students, been so proud of a student we're grinning from ear to ear. These are just some of the feelings we have and you and I know I haven't even gone into the emotions we feel with colleagues, admin, parents, and community.

And what about the emotions our students are dealing with? It's heartbreaking that many of them are dealing with more than we can even imagine.

Essential oils can help soothe our emotions and the emotions of our students.
For general emotional calming, my go-to is Peace & Calming. It is a light, citrusy scent that is a favorite!

Other great options for calming and comfort include Orange, Stress Away and Lavender, Joy, Hope, Harmony, and Release. You can diffuse these or wear them in your quest to help your own emotions and those of your students.

You can also make a handy roll-on by placing 6 - 8 drops of your chosen oil above and filling the rest of the roll-on with fractionated coconut oil. Simple and effective.
Here are two of my favorite DIY roll-ons to try. Recipes are for 10 ml bottles. Top off with fractionated coconut oil or carrier oil of your choice.
📝So Calm Roll-On Recipe 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Frankincense, 3 drops Orange, 2 drops Cedarwood
📝Happy Teacher Roll-On Recipe 2 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Clary Sage, 6 drops Frankincense, 2 drops Grapefruit, 2 drops Orange

My Top Ten Oily Teacher Tips...
10. You don't have to know everything to use the oils. Just use 'em and learn as you go! 🙌

9. Wear your oils every day. Consistency is the key to finding results (same as dieting...you can't eat healthy for one day and expect miracle results). 🗓

8. The latest crud will always have a tough time infiltrating my Inner Defense capsules, a drop of Thieves Vitality in my water and Thyme Vitality in a capsule. 🦠

7. When you don't know what oil to use...go for Lavender. 💜

6. Thieves Hand Sanitizer is the best...use it, share it, repeat.🤲

5. Tea Tree Oil and Purification in my hair at the nape of my neck help me feel in control when we have lice outbreaks at school. 🐜

4. DiGize is your friend when you have a queasy stomach or ate too much. 🍩

3. Slather on Valor essential oil blend whenever you're facing something that requires you to be steady and confident. 💪

2. If your hands are dry from overwashing, make a sugar scrub and use it daily. 📝
📝Happy Hands Sugar Scrub 1/2 cup sugar, 10-15 drops Lemon essential oil (or oil of choice), 1 Tablespoon olive oil. Mix together in a small 6-8 ounce jar. Use regularly to scrub your rough hands, rinse and enjoy.

1. Never leave home without at least 5 of your favorite oils! 🖐

If you're happy and you know it...it's your oils!

If I can leave you with one thought...I want it to be that the oils can bring on your happy. They can change your day and help you focus on something other than your stress. They can uplift your mood and serve as a reminder to stay focused on what matters.

Hey, the stress is gonna be there no matter what. But what if you didn't give it your power?

When you begin infusing your day with more joy, more intention to stay healthy, more protection of your energy...you will have more energy at the end of the day for all the things and people you love.

When you're feeling uplifted...you'll naturally make others feel more uplifted too.

It's easy to start benefiting from the oils - just use a drop. Repeat often. So simple.

Teacher Testimonials...
I thought it would be helpful to ask some of my teacher friends who use Young Living Essential Oils & products to share a sentence or two about how/why they use them and how they help them as teachers. Here's what they said:

"As a teacher Young Living has helped me keep healthy and not have to miss school due to sickness. Thieves and Inner Defense have been lifesavers for me. If I feel even a hint of something coming on, I immediately start taking Inner Defense and I swear it works every time. The thing that has surprised me about diffusing in my classroom is the conversations that I have with my students. I teach high school and they love to talk about what I am diffusing, if they like it or not, and things that they use at home. It really does bring up some great conversations about ways we can be healthy naturally." - Shannon, High School Math Teacher

"YL essential oils allow for me to have quick opportunities to provide self-care at any point in my busy day. The other beneficial side-effect is that I can improve everyone’s frequency because firsties love smelling the oils and notice whenever I put one on. #winwin" -Amy, First Grade Teacher

"I absolutely love Thieves and use it daily in my classroom. I have homemade Thieves wipes which we use to clean tables, counters, and keyboards. I also use Thieves personally to stay healthy during cold and flu season which seems to be close to 9 months long in a school." - Karen, Sixth Grade School Teacher
