Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and the ancillary texts?

By Connor Johnson

The full documentary and the Radio trailer contain the same voiceover and some interview audio clips, this provides interesting information which draws the viewer in to watch the full documentary.

We have used Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ as our music bed throughout our entire documentary and radio trailer to maintain coherence as it relates to the subject matter of material possessions, the vocals are removed to ensure the voiceover and interviews can be heard by the viewers.

Main Product: Full documentary

The same title is used across all three products, this links them together and will draw audience to the main product.
In the radio trailer and the newspaper advert the scheduling is made clear to the audience visually and sonically, which links all three products and is a clear indication to the audience of the information about the programme.

The same music bed is used in the full documentary and the radio trailer, with the song being a catchy hit when it was released this will resonate more with the audience, and also relates back to the subject matter of ‘material possessions’ which links the two clips.

Ancillary Text 1: Radio Trailer

The image of a treasure chest full of various items links with the theme of the programme about furniture and recyclable materials, this is then further highlighted by the use of the song ‘Material Girl’ in the radio trailer (and full documentary) which is about material possessions dominating our society.

Ancillary Text 2: Newspaper Advert
