Impacts of Resistance

Craig N. Shealy, Making Sense of Beliefs and Values

QUESTION:

Why does it matter for us to understand

how we have become who we are?

Any person enters experiences pre-conditioned.

Our pre-existing worldviews and core needs

filter and influence how we:

PERCEIVE

Their impacts are significant within diverse areas of our lives.

PERSONAL IMPACT

We might view reality as if our individual feelings of

security or insecurity, hope or despair

are the only way to view a situation.

But are there maybe also other valid interpretations?

Our view might make sense in our current frame of reference.

RELATIONSHIP IMPACT

We might experience life as if

our individual experiences, thoughts, and feelings

are the entire and accurate representation of reality.

But is it also true for the other person right in front of us?

To us it might appear real in this moment.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

We experience situations from our individual viewpoints and

form perceptions of a group based entirely on our assumptions.

But what might be the real experience of that group?

We connect to members of a community with our pre-conceptions.

SOCIAL IMPACT

We view the world from our subjective knowledge and experience

and base our choices on our worldviews.

But what if we unconsciously resist or avoid painful issues?

Our social choices might feel congruent with our personal views.

“The greatest dilemmas of our times

are directly connected

to the lack of understanding ourselves.”
