The picture above is supposed to represent an American Propaganda poster during World War 2. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, America officially entered the war and hundreds of thousands of people enlisted in the army. As a response for entering the war, America entered in a “war phase” which included creating propaganda posters. I chose to make an anti-Japanese poster because it fit with Louis Zamperini who only fought in the Pacific. I searched up “us ww2 propaganda japan” to get ideas on how it would look. Basing it off different examples, I managed to come up with what I have above. I also went to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_propaganda_during_World_War_II to look at more examples of World War 2 propaganda posters.

U.S Propaganda

This police report was to show the reader that Louis was a very troubled kid in his early life. He drank and smoked before he was thirteen, and he also robbed anything that he could get his hands on. Although a lot of the information I made in the report was fictional, I included some references to the book Unbroken and did some research about the location of Torrance, California. The book mentions that someone might “catch a glimpse of a long-legged boy dashing down the alley, a whole cake balanced on his hands.” I also included the reference that Deputy Jones could not find the cake anywhere in the Zamperini household. This was because Louis set up loot stashes around Torrance to store his stolen goods in. To get the location of the bakery, searched up a random street (Sonoma Street) in Torrance, California and found the zip code to that specific area in Torrance.

Here is an interactive picture of a Consolidated B-24 Liberator. If you hover over the dots, you can see the function of that particular section of the plane and its respective operator (if applicable). As Louis Zamperini’s crew was short, some men served as multiple roles. Although the B24 was one of the newer designs, most crews hated it. It had a tiny bomb bay catwalk, cramped cockpit, clumsy handling, and its looks were not favorable by most crewmen. The B-24 served as a heavy bomber, a bomber with a great bomb load and great range. One of the special things about bombers in this era was that it contained a Norden bombsight. Once the target was set, the bombsight would take control of the plane and drop the bombs at the correct moment to hit the target dead on. This was a huge improvement over the traditional hand-held bombsight. Although modern technology dwarfs the Norden bombsight, it was extremely sophisticated at its time.

Louis Zamperini was the bombardier of the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. I thought it would be fitting to include an interactive diagram on the B-24’s layout. I also did some research on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_B-24_Liberator and in the book Unbroken to find some more information on the B-24. I thought it was interesting that even though the B-24 was one of the newer bombers, crews would rather have an older bomber like the B-17 Flying Fortress.

This newspaper article clipping was to show Louis Zamperini’s record breaking mile run in the NCAA Championships. I used http://www.americainwwii.com/articles/lucky-louie/, http://bringbackthemile.com/athletes/detail/louis_zamperini, and the book Unbroken to create this article. I used facts from all three of these sources to describe Louis Zamperini’s victory and how he planned to participate in the next 1940 Olympics. I also included an "Other Articles" section that featured the ongoing situations during 1938.

I made this poem to simulate the thoughts of Louis Zamperini after forgiving his captors. Almost all of the research put into this poem was from the book. Once Louis forgave his captors in the prisoner of war camps, he believed that forgiveness was the key to everything. Louis also became a great believer in God and was a Christian inspirational speaker. Utilizing that information, I made sure the poem had plenty of references about forgiveness and God.
