Exams for Kubernetes certifications CKAD, CKA and CKS are pretty challenging. Why are they so challenging? First, each exam is practical, meaning, you need to perform actions on Kubernetes resources and clusters. Secondly, each exam is time-bound, so you have to be efficient and quick.
Tip #1: Create your own Kubernetes cluster
- Local installation with Minikube or MicroK8s
- Local installation with Kind Kubernetes IN Docker
- Local installation with Vagrant and VirtualBox
- Local installation with Docker Desktop on Windows, Mac or Linux
- Local installation with k3s on an old laptop/pc
- Remote cluster with Katakoda
- Remote cluster with free credits on any public cloud provider, 3 most popular ones: Azure AKS, Google Cloud GKE, AWS EKS
- Remote cluster or local installation with LXC Containers
- Remote cluster PWK — Play With Kubernetes
- Remote docker Interactive online docker environments on demand: docker

Tip #3: Take advantage of kubernetes documentation
Tip #4: Know vim (or nano) editors well
A lot of exam tasks required editing existing YAML files and ability to use vim (in my case) or nano text editors quickly and efficiently is very important. There are plenty of pages with keyboard shortcuts.
Tip #5: Questions priority
Each question is “weighted” and you have on average 6 minutes per question. If you find yourself stuck, it’s better to note question numbers in notepad available within the environment and come back to it later
Tip #6: Stay Calm
I’m not sure about you, but performance based exams always make me nervous and stress often gets best of me. It is helpful to remember that the exam gives you one free retry, so even if you don’t pass first time, don’t worry.

Some say that Kubernetes is a fabric for cloud-native applications, a platform to build platforms or an operating system of the cloud. Well, all of those statements are true, but most importantly, Kubernetes is everywhere and its popularity will only grow, as it fades to the background powering workloads on servers in public, private and hybrid clouds, on edge and even in space. A big part of the DevOps movement is ""learning culture"". Companies expect more from new and seasoned employees, technologies come and go with neck-breaking speed. One proven way of continuous learning is investing in yourself by learning and validating your knowledge with a certificate. CNCF created 3 Kubernetes certifications, one for administrators: CKA, for developers: CKAD and security specialists: CKS. During this talk we will look into the learning process, certification details and I will share with you tips and tricks on how to pass the exams.
