In the context of volumetric (3D) image analysis, a structure tensor is a 3-by-3 matrix which summarizes orientation in a certain neighborhood around a certain point.
The general idea is to measure the orientation of the structures in the 3D volume
A symmetric positive semidefinite matrix that encodes the predominant orientation and the degree of anisotropy in an image window.
With slightly simplified notation:
where Ix and Iy denote partial derivatives, and Σw denotes weighted sum over some fixed windowing function.

For an object in 3D, the local thickness at any point of the object is defined as the radius of the largest sphere which fits inside the object and contains the point
