Remember

The cause of death written on the lowest line of the death

certificate is important and will be taken in as the underlying

cause of death.

Case 1

Patient A is admitted with Acute Gastroenteritis and dies in the ward.

Let us take examples of Case studies where there are no intermediate or antecedent causes of death

Case 1

Patient A is admitted with Acute Gastroenteritis and dies in the ward?

With Acute Gastroenteritis being the Underlying Cause of death, the death certificate can be filled in either of these ways

Case 2

Patient B is admitted with Acute Gastroenteritis and dehydration and then dies in the ward?

Let us take another case study where there are no intermediate or antecedent causes of death

Case 2

Patient B is admitted with Acute Gastroenteritis and dehydration and then dies in the ward?

  • Here Acute Gastroenteritis is Underlying Cause of death, and Dehydration is immediate Cause of death.
  • The death certificate can be filled in either of these ways

It is important that on the death certificate

Acute Gastroenteritis, being the Underlying Cause of Death, has to be written on the lowest line.

And the CoD that is written in the lowest line will be taken in as underlying CoD
