Who Are We?

Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School Mathematics Honor Society with more than 110,000 students at more than 2,400 schools in the United States and in 20 foreign countries 

 

We are dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school.

Why Join MAO?

Requirements

Associate Members

  • Completion of Algebra I
  • Enrollment in Honors Geometry

Inducted Members

  • Completion of Honors Geometry
  • Enrollment in a higher level math course (enrollment in a higher  level math course is no longer required upon successful completion of either Calculus AB or BC)
  • Must complete application to be considered!

General Requirements

  • Must obtain at least 7 points per semester
  • Must take math classes at the honors level
  • Must maintain an 85 or above in all math classes (except for any class containing calculus in the name; for such classes, an 80 or above is required)
  • Must maintain an 80 or above in all non-math classes

Demerits

If a member receives 3 demerits, [s]he will be placed under probationary status for three weeks. During this period, the member may schedule a meeting with the Appeals Committee to determine membership status; otherwise, his/her membership will be discontinued.

Meetings

  • First Friday of every month (generally)
  • Check the calendar on our website if you are unsure about dates
  • You must attend every monthly meeting unless you email us with a valid excuse at least 24 hours in advance
  • At each meeting, updates and information will be given, and afterwards, we will play mathematical "games" as a group
  • Staying until the end for each meeting (including the activity afterwards) will result in half a point rewarded

Weekly Friday Math Practices

 

  • Every Friday after school (except MAO and SNHS meeting days)
  • First practice: September 16
  • Sessions will likely cover:
    • Hard math class reviews
    • Special and Applied Math Topics
      • Linear Algebra
      • Graph Theory
      • Cryptography
    • Competition Preparation:
      • AMC 10/12, AIME
      • University competitions
      • UIL

Tutoring

  • Help A-Hall math teachers with tutorials after school (in-person only)
    • Sign up on signup genius before teaching (max 10 tutors per week)
    • Turn in an hour slip each time to a google forms (form on website)
    • At least one hour each semester

Math and Science Night

  • Create creative math and science related booths for elementary and middle school kids!
  • Host practice contests with students from around the district.

MAO Banquet

  • May 2023
  • Induction ceremony
