Route Upgrade BREEAM – assuring sustainability excellence
BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method
for masterplanning projects, infrastructure and buildings.
BREEAM Infrastructure is a new pilot version of BREEAM for newly constructed infrastructure assets, paving the way for the next generation of sustainable infrastructure standards.
BREEAM rating | Minimum BREEAM Score (%) |
Outstanding | 85 |
Excellent | 70 |
Very good | 55 |
Good | 45 |
Pass | 30 |
Unclassified | <30 |
TRU is the only rail upgrade programme (and the only Network Rail project) in the BREEAM Infrastructure pilot programme. We are targeting an ‘Excellent’ rating.”

TRU BREEAM target credit summary
In order meet the TRU requirement to progress with a BREEAM Infrastructure assessment,
with a target rating of ‘Excellent’,
we have identified a list of target credits. The following pages give
an overview of these credits.
For more details on the target credit requirements please refer
to the TRU BREEAM Execution Plan or contact one of the BREEAM specialists with the PMO or
Alliance Sustainability Teams.

Route Upgrade BREEAM – assuring sustainability excellence
The TRU BREEAM Execution Plan sets out details of the agreed approach to BREEAM on TRU. This includes:
- Overview of benefits and costs
- PMO and Alliance responsibilities
- Detailed requirements for achieving the target ‘Excellent’ rating (Appendix A)
- Cost mitigation and value management strategies
- ‘Sense-check’ process [see page 18] to maintain value for money and ensure consistency with overriding safety, technical, and programme requirements.
Delivery of work in accordance with the BREEAM Execution Plan is a formal requirement for each Project.
