Who Won The Japanese Series For The First Time In 38 Years

The 2023 Japan Series between the Hanshin Tigers and the Orix Buffaloes, called the "Kansai Series," will begin.

Hanshin and Orix will play the first game of the Japanese Series at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, on the 28th. It is a real match between the two major league champions.

The Orix will advance to the Japan Series for the third consecutive year. He won the runner-up prize in 2021 and the championship in 2022. Hanshin reached the Japan Series for the first time in nine years since 2014 when Oh Seung-hwan (Samsung) played as a closer.

Hanshin won the Japan Series only in 1985. Since then, he has finished second three times (2003, 2005 and 2014). He will try to win the Japanese Series for the first time in 38 years.

Hanshin Okada Akinobu played as Hanshin captain when he won in 1985. And as a coach, he led Hanshin to the Japan Series in 2005, but lost four games to Chiba Lotte, failing to win the championship.

Okada said that Lee Seung-yeop, who played for Chiba Lotte at the time, had a tough time on the first Japanese series stage.

At that time, Lee Seung-yeop hit three home runs in the series, contributing to Chiba Lotte's victory. He hit a solo home run in Game 1, a two-run home run in Game 2, and a two-run home run in Game 4. Chiba Lotte hit nine home runs and Lee Seung-yeop hit three home runs alone. Six other batters recorded one each.

Chiba Lotte won the first game 10-1, the second game 10-0, the third, 10-1, and the fourth game 3-2. It was a crushing defeat for Hanshin. The total score of both teams in the four games was 33-4. The buzzword "334," which sarcastically criticizes Hanshin, is still mentioned. For Hanshin and Okada, it is a number of nightmares that they do not want to remember.

Okada was eliminated by Chunichi in the 2007 Climax Series First Stage with two losses. In 2008, he also met Chunichi in the first stage and lost the first round, eventually eliminating the game with one win and two losses.

Okada stepped down due to poor performance after serving as Hanshin coach from 2004 to 2008. He later served as Orix's coach from 2010 to 2012, served as a baseball commentator and critic, and then took over as Hanshin's coach again last year. Okada will personally try to win the Japan Series once again for the first time in 18 years since 2005.

Hanshin has the lowest ERA of 2.61 in the two major leagues this season. Pitcher power is an advantage.

Orix coach Satoshi Nakashima said of Hanshin, "It's a really strong team. I think it's a team with very high pitching power," he said. "Our pitching staff is behind. I don't think I'm going to hit much in batting, so I have to suppress my opponent's score for sure," he said.

Meanwhile, in the first game on the 28th, Yoshinobu Yamamoto of Orix, who achieved four gold medals for the third consecutive year, and Shoki Murakami of Hanshin will be the starting pitchers. Yamamoto recorded 16 wins, 6 losses and a 1.21 ERA in 23 games. Murakami had 10 wins, 6 losses and a 1.75 ERA in 22 games.
