Germany's Lightning Attack

September 1, 1939 - Hitler made a surprise attack in Poland

 The German invasion of Poland was the first test of Germany's newest military strategy - the blitzkrieg. 

The Soviets Make Their Move

September 17, 1939 - Stalin sent troops to occupy the eastern part of Poland

Stalin moved to annex the countries of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. The Finns resisted.

French and British troops were mobilized along the Maginot Line

Maginot Line - a system of fortifications along France's border with Germany

They waited for the Germans to attack but nothing happened
