Sound
Paranormal activity
Before every event, the sound dramatically increases as the action and shots become faster. This is to create a shocked emotion for the viewers. When the action occurs, onomatopoeia sounds are added to create a sense of realism , as well as an increase of a heart beat. Increasing the noise enhances the emotion of being scared and afraid of what could happen.
Towards the end of the trailer, we hear loud, non-diegetic screeches as every shot changes rapidly. Having non-diegetic sound helps create ambiguity.
'Bloody Mary'
The term 'Bloody Mary' is used throughout the trailer. This helps identify the genre as it is a common term associated with horror.
Titles
During the beginning titles, a high pitch noise was repeated slowly becoming increasingly loud and intense as the trailer continued, mating the pace and storyline.
Towards the end of the trailer, the length of the titles become shorter to keep up with the pace of the action. This is also followed with shorter phrases.
Who are the target audience?
I believe paranormal activity is targeted at young adults and teenagers age 16-26. This is because they have advertised their trailer on social media sites(Ending shot) commonly used by young people.
Apart from the children, the characters consists of young adults creating relatable characters and enforcing realism.
Sound - Unfriended
One sound effect used was a type writer. This contributed to viewers understanding the storyline as it is partly based around online social media.
At the beginning of the trailer, a high pitch soundtrack played as we saw happy memories. This contrasted with the low-pitched sound effects as the frightful action begins.
The use of dialogue allows us to understand what is happening in the film. Diegetic sound allows us to identify the genre, repetition of screams tells us the character is in fear or danger therefore suggesting the film could be a horror.
Target Audience
The main target audience for Unfriended is teenagers, aged 15-19. I believe this as all characters are of similar age therefore allowing audiences to be able to relate. The event took place at a party, stereotypically where teenagers socialise together and drink alcohol. Majority of the storyline was explained using social media, a common way teenagers talk. Having the same aspects as the characters adds realism to the film.
This film is also targeted at people wanting more shock than gore. We know this as the trailer only shows one bloody scene however many unpredicted shocks,
Sound - Gallows
From the beginning of the trailer, we hear diegetic sound emphasised such as a heatbeat and fast, heavy breaths. This tells us that the character is anxious and panicked.
The non-diegetic crash of metal instruments combined with a supernatural raw is used to scare the audience as one of the characters are being dragged away. Silence before this is used to build tension as the sound and movement juxtapose each shot.
Sound
Text
Overlapping this is a diegetic powerful scream of the character. This tells us that the character is fearful and petrified as unlawful strength has pulled her back. The scream is also louder than the non-diegetic sound therefore highlighting the importance of the danger.
Diegetic sound of a women crying is repeated throughout the beginning of the trailer. This automatically tells viewers that she is vulnerable and suggests she is already in danger. The sound of the character crying leaves viewers feeling uneasy.
Target Audience
I believe the target audience for Gallows is 15-25. This is because the location of the film is in a school(challenging the stereotype) therefore having a relateable storyline.
I also believe it is targeted at both male and female. We see a focus of young women dealing with distressing emotions as well as a bundle of violence attracting male audiences.
