What is post-processing ?
What is post-processing ?
Makeup after bath 😉
Formal :
Informal :
Performing a task on a printed object to enhance it.
What is post-processing ?
It is important to consider how the overall dimensions of a part will be altered if post processing is implemented.
NOTE !!!
Variation in Dimensional Accuracy
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
Dimensional Tolerance | +/- 0.5%. z direction is typically mre dimensionally accurate. |
Shrinkage/ Warping |
Thermoplastics that requires a higher print temperature are more at risk. Shrinking behaviour is hard to predict and dependent on the design so no guidelines can be given. |
Support Requirements | Essential to acheive an accurate part. Required for overhangs less than 45 degrees and bridge longer than 20mm. |
Examples
- In FDM and Material Jetting - removing the support material
Examples
- In SLS and Powder Bed Fusion - removing the powder

Provide a few examples of troubleshooting in 3D printing
Introduction to Digital Manufacturing
What is Troubleshooting
Trouble shooting is all about problem solving. It is a systematic approach to solve problems that is often used to find correct issues with complex machines, electronics and computers

Troubleshooting in 3D printing
- Warping
- Thin Layers and Layer splits
- Poor Infill

Troubleshooting in 3D printing
Warping
This issue comes when printed object doesnot firmly stick to the print surface. It could be temperature problem or something being out of adjustment
Introduction to Digital Manufacturing
Troubleshooting in 3D printing
Warping
- Clean the print surface with swab of acetone
- Check the temperature settings and make sure they are correct
- Make sure that Z-axis endstop has not come out of adjustment
- Relevel the printbed and make sure the print surface is level to the nozzle across the entire platform

Troubleshooting in 3D printing
Thin Layer and Layer Splits
This is a random problem. All the other layers of print will be fine but one or two layers are either very thin or split apart
Introduction to Digital Manufacturing
Troubleshooting in 3D printing
Thin Layer and Layer Splits
- Check the diamtre of filament setting in your slicer utility
- Check the extrusion temperature to make sure that filament is getting heated upto the right temparture
- Check the quality of the filament, filament that fails to maintain a consistent diametre through the spool can cause areas to thin out
Introduction to Digital Manufacturing
Troubleshooting in 3D printing
Poor Infill
This type of problematic printing occurs when we print curved shapes with gentle slopping on the top surface
Introduction to Digital Manufacturing
Troubleshooting in 3D printing
Poor Infill
- While printing the such kind of shapes make sure that print speed to set to lower
- Make sure that you increase the infill of the extrusion width
- Check the temperature of the printer throughly
