The History of the ukelele
- Originated in the 19th Century as a Hawaiian interpretation of the machete (a small guitar-like instrument).
- Gained popularity elsewhere in the U.S. in the early 20th century and from there spread internationally.
- The tone and the volume of the instrument varies with the size and construction
- Ukeleles commonly come in four sizes:
- Soprano
- Concert
- Tenor; and
- Baritone

The grid represents the first five frets of the ukelele as if it is standing vertically.
The chord name is written at the top, the dots show where to put your fingers and the number at the bottom shows you which finger to use.

The four lines represent the strings as if the ukelele is facing you - that is, the g-string at the bottom and the A-string at the top.
The numbers show the fret to play. You read from left to right and you play the notes shown above each other at the same time.
