Conceptual Design Exercise
Conceptual Design Exercise
Work individually or in groups of 2.
1. Pick a live AV event type (concert / live streaming , etc)
2. Choose a client, venue and time (anyone and anywhere in the world)
3. Sketch out your ideas for the theme of this event. Research the references shown today!
4. What type of visuals would you choose? Create a mood-board from your research.
5. Sketch out a very brief layout plan of your equipment setup. Where would you put your LED screen/projector or audio? How would you hide the wires?
Present to the class your presentation (you can use Google Slides to create your presentation). Tell us about your inspiration, your research and then your conceptual project (minimum 5 slides, maximum 10 slides).
Upload your presentation here with your names as the file name.

14:30 - 16:00 Create a basic physical prototype using a projector based on your conceptual design from yesterday
Visual Design Exercise
Visual Design Exercise
We have 5 projectors.
1. Pick one visual element from your concept design from yesterday to develop today
2. Think of how it can be achieved using one of the three softwares we learned today
3. Prepare your visuals
4. We will be using projectors to 'test' our ideas out by switching between projects, kind of like a prototype live show! Projects with similar formats will share a projector. Those with specific types of formats might need to use their own projector.

Visual Design Exercise
We have 5 projectors and 5 different 'shows'.
Your groups have been picked out for you based on your conceptual design exercise from Day 1.
Decide as a group on an overall theme. The theme can be chosen from the presentations from Day 1 if you'd like.
Imagine you are creating and mixing for the main visual of a live AV event. Try to address the overall theme to tell a better conceptual story.
Your task is to create visual elements that can be manipulated live (e.g. live VJing, live streaming, live interaction, etc.)
For this exercise, you do not need to create a built set. A projection showing your visuals will do.
Pop Up Store
Group 1
Some ideas:
- Decide on a common theme that is shared in your design concepts from Day 1
- Group 1 will create the first scene, while Group 2 create the second scene.
- Remember that you will be sharing the projector. What types of scenes can you share using the same set-up?
- Each group will be creating visual concepts separately and then at the end, combining them together in Resolume Avenue to create a 'show'.
If you have any other ideas (with live streaming, or even an interactive web-cam experience on your laptop, consult with Jo first.)
Group 1: Jin & Shuting
Group 2: Minjung & Emily
Award Show
Group 2
Some ideas:
- Pick two acts that you will be creating visuals for.
- Create a playlist for two performances back to back.
- Create visuals for the two performances, and mix them live using Resolume Avenue to create the performance segment of an award show.
Flora
Art Installation
Group 3
Some ideas:
- Pick a villain from your conceptual design to develop more.
- Develop a storyboard for the narrative of this villain (around 3 different scenes)
- Create a soundscape for all scenes.
- Play the soundscape live and mix the visuals live as the sounds change from one scene to another.
Nicole, Hazirah & Zaitun
Music Festival 1 (Electronic Music)
Group 4
Some ideas:
- Each group is a VJ & DJ duo on the lineup for a music festival.
- Create your 2-3 song playlist and visuals in your separate groups.
- Create your line-up: who goes first, second, and last?
- When the 'show' starts, each group will take turns using the projector for their performance.
- Remember to create your VJ/DJ logo (can just be simple image of text in front of a background) so the audience knows who is currently about to play. Put this logo on the projector before you start your live visual mixing.
Group 1: Iman & Estella
Group 2: Zhaf & Lip Khoon
Group 3: Hugues & Pur
Music Festival 2 (Rock/Popular Music)
Group 5
Some ideas:
- Each group is a VJ & Musician duo on the lineup for a music festival.
- Create your 2-3 song playlist and visuals in your separate groups.
- Create your line-up: who goes first, second, and last?
- When the 'show' starts, each group will take turns using the projector for their performance.
- Remember to create your band logo (can just be simple image of text in front of a background) so the audience knows who is currently about to play. Put this logo on the projector before you start your live visual mixing.
