What is Projection Mapping?
Projection Mapping
-
A technique of using projectors to shine light
-
Shining on specific areas of surfaces (usually irregular shaped).
-
Building facades, indoor objects, stages, landscapes.
Examples of Projection Mapping (facade)
Set Design (World Stage x Pix Productions)
Landscape Projections (teamLab)
Indoor Objects (Le Petit Chef)
Amon Tobin ISAM Live
Box by Box and Dolly
FORMATS by Anne Marie Himmelmann
Perspective
-
'Depth' tricks have one perspective that is the 'sweet spot', usually from the front or the same direction as light traveling from the projector
Light and Shape
-
Light from a projector emits from one source. In larger surfaces, multiple projectors are used to cover all needed surfaces.
Projected images on angled surfaces will appear differently to a viewer.
Light from a projector can only project images where the light touches a surface.
Beware of protruding surfaces, they will create blind spots and shadows.

Projector brightness is measured in lumens. In home theaters, it's a minimum of 1500 lumens.

Throw distance is the projector's distance from the lens to the screen surface. It varies from type of projector and how large an image the projector can throw.

The screen size from each projector varies, but you're able to calculate the throw distance and screen size from this link here.

Keystone Correction
Aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width to its height. Most common video projector aspect ratios are 4:3, 16:10 and 16:9.

Keystone Correction
Keystone correction digitally adjusts the image to be a perfect rectangle if the projector is not perpendicular to the projected surface.
Setting up the Projector
Get familiar with the projector by playing with the settings as mentioned in the previous slides
Use the slide after this as the image to project onto a surface.

Let's get into the basics
What is Set Design?
Es Devlin - Beyonce, Formation Tour, 2015
Set Design
-
Design and creation of the sets used in works of performance art (movies, plays, concerts, fashion runways).
-
It includes elements of physical props, built architecture, and light.
Es Devlin - Don Giovanni, Royal Opera House, 2014

Group Work
Form 6 groups
(3-4 students per group). We only have 6 projectors and 22 students.
Research
Take the references from the slides before to take inspiration from them and to drive a concept.
Conceptual development/sketching
Sketch your ideas out or play with the form of the paper and agree on what type of surface to project on.
Constructing draft sets using basic materials
Create basic shapes by taking your chosen material and creating sketches of your shapes. Compose your shapes so that they are in a form that can be mapped in a way that suits your concept.
Creating a Projection Surface
Visualize through sketch. Draw out iterations of ideas and discuss which is best for a potential projection surface. Keep in mind that the light only comes from one angle.
Make prototypes of your shape. Create a few prototypes of your shape and test your projector on them. Create fast, messy ones first, then use it as a template for a more final object.
Paper cut-outs that create dynamic shapes and voids.
A three-dimensional shape.
Paper foldings that create depth and angles
Paper shapes can also be found as templates online.
Selecting Visuals to Project
-
Visuals and Shapes. Is there a story to your visuals? What might fit with the shapes you have created or vice versa? Match your visuals to the shape for more visual impact.
-
Keep it Simple. Remember the projector angle is specific and create shadows where you don't want them. Keep the dimensionality of your surface visible to the light of the projector.
Some previous student work
Documentation
-
Setting up. Remember to take images of your process. Take images of when you're sketching, setting up the projector, etc.
-
Final projection mapping results. Capture nice images and videos of the final results. Make sure the light levels in your camera makes the visuals look clear and that it is not too contrasted.
Final presentation
-
On Friday, we will be doing a Group presentation together.
-
These are your deliverables:
- 2 minute "show" of your projection. It should have visuals and can have audio. You may also 'perform' with the visual if you'd like.
- 5 minute presentation (slides, powerpoint, or a video documentation) showing your initial ideas, conceptualization, setting up, and reflections.
-
5 minute response from me and the class about your project.
