Background

- After parents died, served as page for the Queen
- Enabled him to study and learn more on navigation

- Gained many more navigation skills in Spain
- Found other explorers who shared a same goal as him

- In 1518, persuaded Charles V to give large funds

Navigation - An Arduous Journey
Beginnings
- Set off with 5 ships in search of a westwards route
- Travelled along coast line of South America
- Many other captains plotted to kill him due to his Portuguese ethnic
- Executed one of the captains
- Left another captain ashore in St. Julian
- Discovered Strait of Magellan with only 3 ships left
Navigation - An Arduous Journey
Across the Pacific
- Very long and dangerous journey across Pacific
- Often ran into lack of food and resources
- Many crew members died
- Many crew members mutinied
- Barely arrived at island Cebu, 400 miles away from Spice Islands
- Befriended by local tribal king (Rajah Humabon)
- Persuaded to help fight against tribal enemy
- In 1521, killed in battle against enemy

Impact - Basically Huge
Disgrace from Royals
- Neither Spain nor Portugal honored, respected, or acknowledged Ferdinand Magellan's contributions
- Portugal rejected him from further expeditions in his early life
- Lost favor with kings and viceroys
- Spain disrespected Ferdinand Magellan's accomplishments
- Lost 4 ships during journey
- Died during the expedition
- Received much criticism from crew
- Charles V never fulfilled promises to Magellan
Impact - Basically Huge
Great Accomplishments
- Successfully discovered new route to Spice Islands
- Returned with incredible amounts of spices and wealth
- Completed map of the world for the first time
- Helped cartographers know true size of the earth
- Helped to prove that the earth was indeed round
