How can you prevent milk from spoiling?
By Mikayla Schroeder

Introduction
In some households, milk spoils faster than it can be used. The quicker the milk spoils, the more milk is wasted. The more milk wasted, leads to more money wasted due to the necessity to purchase fresh milk. The more constant the temperature stays the longer it will take to spoil. If milk has been left at room temperature for longer than 2 hours, the safest rule is to throw it out. The process of rapidly heating raw milk, holding it for a short specified period of time, then rapidly cooling it, removes most of the bacteria from milk, thus helping it last longer. Some of the remaining harmless bacteria can grow and multiply, although very slowly, at refrigerator temperatures, eventually causing the products to spoil.
Hypothesis
I believe that if you boil your milk and add baking soda before you refrigerate it, it will extend the milks life before the expiration date.

Materials Needed
-
6 Pints of Milk
-
Clean Pot
-
1 tablespoon of Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
-
1 tablespoon of Salt
-
stove
- refrigerator
Method
- Variable A of milk I placed in the refrigerator untouched.
- I then added ½ tablespoon of Baking soda to Variable B of milk, then place it in the fridge.
- I then added ½ tablespoon of salt to Variable C of milk, then place it in the fridge.
- I then let the stove preheat for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
- I then poured Variable D of milk into the pot and placed it on the stove until it started to boil.
- Then I placed the funnel inside the original milk bottle and poured the milk back inside and placed it inside the refrigerator
- I then boiled Variable E of milk, once it started to boil I removed it from the heat and added ½ tablespoon of baking soda.
- Then I placed the funnel inside the original milk bottle and poured the milk back inside and placed it inside the refrigerator.
- I did the same thing to Variable F of milk but added ½ tablespoon of salt instead of baking soda.
- I monitored ever pint by use by date, appearance, texture and smell daily.
Conclusion
After careful examination my hypothesis had proven to be true, But Boiling milk did prove to last longer. Adding Salt also had a longer lasting effect, almost at the same rate as the baking soda.
